Conversation at London ticket counter yesterday:

HIM: It’s peak time. The next off-peak train is in three hours. Travelling sooner will cost you an extra £25 peak upgrade.

ME: So it’s a £25 fare add-on now… or three hours in a pub?!

HIM: ...I guarantee you will spend more than £25 in a pub here.

Very good result for Leicester against Derby county this afternoon. Hoping this is the start of a long term improvement in the Foxes' fortunes, but for now I'm just enjoying the victory

To be a good person you have to risk saying ‘no’, being disliked or called “mean”.
Because sticking up for what’s right against misinformed and/or awful people, they’ll be upset at boundaries and demands for equitability and well… tough, deny the harm until they evolve for your principles.

Robbie Gibb was appointed to the BBC Board by Boris Johnson, was an editorial advisor for GB News, and worked as Theresa May's Director of Comms.

He is not impartial or neutral. The government should remove him from the Board immediately to protect the BBC's independence.

Plays are (generally) meant to be performed in front of an audience and are (generally) written with that in mind, so absolutely seeing it performed by competent actors, live and with others around you, makes a huge difference. Most theatrical films assume an communal audience as well.
We saw Romeo and Juliet at Shakespeare’s Globe, and it’s crazy how much more sense it made with a live audience and the Shakespearean actors. I don’t remember laughing ever while reading the play, but we laughed a lot and had a lot of fun even though it was a tragedy

Leaving the ECHR is just another "cause" that right-wing lunatics can latch onto.

It's Brexit 2.

And like the original most people backing, it don't understand it, don't really believe in what they
are doing and do not care one jot what havoc it causes.

Reminder to folks that when an author/other creative tells you that a new work is available, when you go into their comments to tell them why you're not going to get it, you look like an asshole, I'm sure your stand is principled and all that but going out of your way to tell us "no sale" is dickish

Anglophone culture's slow descent into a witless insistence that art depicting something must be endorsing it is genuinely horrifying.

has anyone considered the whole "these people don't feel listened to anywhere other than a fascist rally" might be due to the fact that they should not, in fact, be listened to?

So this is apparently how it goes these days:

(violence occurs)

TRANSPHOBE: It's the evil violent trans people who have done this!

(perpetrator revealed not to be trans)

Statement from Trans Safety Network on the Linehan arrest.

TSN understand Linehan's tweet to be an unambiguous call for vigilante violence against trans women in toilets. And yet senior government figures and police have jumped to find a way to make excuses for it.

There are no sacrifices that will keep any right-wingers happy. They're not going to say "okay, we got rid of trans rights, gay marriages are OK" or "we stopped small boats, people with leave to remain can stay". They'll want another target. Appeasement is pointless. Don't give them an inch.
Should we move away from trans rights, like sports, which affect "very few" people?

Once you decide that [one group] can be sacrificed, you’re operating within a fascist logic, because that means there might be a second one you’re willing to sacrifice, and a third. (Judith Butler)
This is stupid. Newsom is not anti trans. He just doesnt believe that trans should be in some women’s sports that they could have a physical advantage. Most the population has this view. As they work through what is fair for all, quit throwing newsom under the bus.
