In case folks need a reminder, Harvard Chabad posted over a year ago (and were never publicly chastised by Harvard admin for) claiming that the FXB Center for Health and Human Rights & the School of Public Health “essentially function[s] as Hamas or Palestinian embassies.”

Earlier this year, I had to withdraw a publication on genocide hours before it was to be published due to senior Harvard administrators’ threats to my Harvard-employed coauthor. Last week, they fired Mary Bassett for refusing to ignore Palestine. My response:

Area Studies Centers at UNC shuttered due to insufficient "return on investment," unclear "metrics of success," and non-alignment with the chancellor's "priorities."

One day (soon), we will look back on the miracle of the public research university and will scarcely believe that it ever existed.

Something I talked about in this episode was the decision to permanently and irrevocably ‘out’ myself in my scholarship. It’s a decision I struggled with then and since but which I’ve never regretted.

My neurotype facilitates my research and when I embraced that my research got better.
On this episode of Talking Disability (which I host on behalf of The Classical Pod) I spoke to brilliant guests @elliemackinroberts.net and Annis Wiltshire about autism and neurodiversity in the study of the ancient world. 🏺 Find it wherever you get your podcasts! 🎧

My latest for @hyperallergic.com looks at a new article in JRA on Berenike, Indo-Roman trade, and of course some pet monkeys which may have had pet piglets or kittens? 🐵 Really this is just amazing research showing us the extensive connections between the Mediterranean and India. #GlobalAntiquity

The recent archaeological discovery also deepens our understanding of trade networks between India and the Roman Empire.

No it’s ok we can cut all the area studies programs. We’ll just hire one “global studies“ Prof with a degree in English literature.

Okay the only thing I’ll say about the Compact article is field specific: the trope of “traditional” military history vs. “woke” critical theory needs to die.

How could we even write about the Roman military w/o addressing colonization, empire, masculinity, trauma, ethnicity?
This is 100% incorrect as the explanation for why someone obsessed with Roman *military* history is not being hired.

Brown University released a statement about a Palestinian student that's being smeared online as the shooting suspect.

Not going to share his post because it includes the student's personal info but one of those spreading this harmful rumor was the spokesperson for Turning Point USA, Andrew Kolvet.
