I got this useful bon mot from a middle school teacher recently.

In response to, “I DONT UNDERSTAND,” he calmly said, “okay what steps have you taken to understand?”

And that’s when I realized that a lot of folks have no steps.

Did you know that in Canada, if a budget doesn’t pass the government doesn’t shut down?

Federal workers aren’t furloughed.

Funding for social services doesn’t dry up.

Failure to pass a budget triggers an election.

It puts the politicians jobs on the line.

They get the budget passed.

Senators on the brink of retirement who lived full, wealthy lives and never feared the loss of their own healthcare voting for their constituents to die from their inability to afford the same is treasonous

"I am an establishment Democrat and I'm here to say that Bernie Sanders is much more in line with where I and many other Democrats are today than Chuck Schumer is."

I think a lot of the anger this morning stems from a feeling that we did our part, but they did not do theirs. This is an oversimplification, but my dudes, no wonder people are like, “OK, let’s try the democratic socialist, then.”

They care more about their careers and stock portfolios than their constituents.
Reminded of when they lost the midterms under Biden and then simply declined to raise the debt ceiling on a clean vote before Republicans could use it as leverage. Just no urgency, no foresight, no fight in those moments.

This might sound crazy, but travel disruptions at Thanksgiving would have been … good? It would have driven home why we need a functional government. Dems could have capitalized. Instead, they worried more about disrupted travel than people getting thrown off their health insurance. Unbelievable.

It really does seem like there's a decent chance that these senators screwed us because they don't want their personal Thanksgiving plans to be disrupted.
Anyway a great way to radicalize people is for them to realize that you just abandoned their chance at being able to access and afford health care because you didn’t like waiting in line at the airport.

agreeing to make a terrible deal while your main opponent is quite literally being boo'd on live tv by an entire stadium of people is the kind of political instinct you'd normally only find in a 3 week old dead goldfish

Throw everyone out. Term limits. Upper age limits. New blood!

This bullshit makes me want to run for office on a burn-it-all-down platform.
I'm real real close to feeling like we can't ever know who these 8 took the fall for, so maybe we should just throw them all out and start from scratch.

My family has been without half our income for 40 days. It has been.. very hard.

We are willing to feel that pain so people can have health care next year, or to undo these illegal recissions.

We are not willing to have been put through this for NOTHING.

One reason I don't think it's useful to argue about the correct tactics for Democrats to win elections is winning elections isn't enough. They've won the presidency 5 out of 9 times since 1992 and where are we now. The question is how we create something better than a dead cat bounce party

i think this is key. taking the deal would amount to taking the blame. it would turn a clear political victory into an unambiguous defeat.
If the Dems blink after all of this, for a deal that all but ensures no ACA subsidies in 2026 anyway, then what was the purpose of letting the shutdown go for 40 days in the first place?
