I find it really sad that a society whose constituents generate hundreds of beautiful scientific and artistic images both by using a scope and grabbing a pencil and paper, uses AI slop to promote something 🧪

Hey @nature.com, have you got an explanation for how the hell THIS happened? & especially why you accepted a paper with such a bizarre piece of genAI slop in it?!
& more to the point, why we should take you seriously at all going forward?

Hell yeah!
Australia recorded ZERO cases of cervical cancer in women under 25 for the first time since they started tracking the cancer in the 80s.

This is the power of vaccines.

The HPV vaccine is extremely effective at preventing cancer.

Viruses can be oncogenic. Get your vaccines and protect yourself!
newsGP - Australia set for world-first cervical cancer elimination
Vaccination programs have played a key role, and GPs remain ‘instrumental’ in boosting screening rates to reach the 2035 target.

It's sites like these that makes me really appreciate just much of a massive boon the internet has been for science
🧵1/9 There are 35,000+ fish species, but we have formal social-behaviour classifications for a tiny fraction. Most knowledge lives in the experience of researchers, fishers, divers, aquarists, naturalists, and Indigenous communities, but almost none of it is centralised. So we built ShoalBase.org.
ShoalBase | Join, Explore, Contribute Now
ShoalBase offers a global database on fish social behaviour, supporting research, conservation, and ecology through community contributions and visual data mapping.

Damn, that's hot!
So happy to announce our new preprint, “A geothermal amoeba sets a new upper temperature limit for eukaryotes.” We cultured a novel amoeba from Lassen Volcanic NP (CA, USA) that divides at 63°C (145°F) 🔥 - a new record for euk growth!

VACCINES DO NOT CAUSE AUTISM, YOU FLAMING SHITBIRDS.

THE LAST TIME HHS, AS CURRENTLY OCCUPIED BY RFK JR., CONDUCTED A “COMPREHENSIVE ASSESSMENT” OF THE CAUSES OF AUTISM THEY BLAMED TYLENOL AND THEN, BECAUSE IT WAS BULLSHIT, HAD TO WALK IT BACK.

I sometimes wonder if these people actually know what cancer is. Obviously they don't know what it is in a "I know biology" way, but they seem to not even have a layman's understanding of it. Like, random people on the street can debunk this shit..

The more I play, especially now that I have started to crank up the Fear, the more apparent it becomes that Hades 2 badly needs a colour-blind mode, so I can eat shit because I am bad the game rather than because I literally couldn't see what was going on..

If you have a very low-latitude aurora observation from tonight, please record your exact time and rough location and DO NOT DELETE your photo. These observations will be important for scientific research of this event.

Comment below if you have a low-latitude aurora sighting.

My ask of any science enthusiasts who tell the story of Rosalind Franklin:
Don't make her life be about the DNA debacle. She died far too young, but she was a promising scientist in her own right, a mentor and scientific author.

Not for Watson or Crick, but for her legacy.

You will be seeing more and more stories like this. Our ability to manipulate and fix our own cells has increased massively over the last few decades thanks to advances in our understanding of things like miRNA.
There is more truly amazing shit just over the horizon!

Don't forget being partially responsible for cell death.
The mitochondrion giveth and taketh away
Expectation: Mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell.

Reality: Has its own DNA but partially. Is its own organism but partially. Responsible for TCA cycle but partially and only in eukaryotes. Responsible for all energy but only half the time in plants.

Mitochondria's grey area has grey area.
You know what? Fuck it. I can’t be bothered anymore. I’m just going to make videos about mitochondria and ribosomes from now on

Unmanaged maternal pain and severe stress during pregnancy, perhaps being terrified that you will give your kid autism, has well recognized and potentially severe complications that can harm mom and baby.
Trump: "If you can't tough it out, if you can't do it, that's what you're gonna have to do. You'll take a Tylenol, but it'll be very sparingly ... I think you shouldn't take it."

Acetaminophen/Tylenol use during pregnancy was not associated with children’s risk of autism, ADHD, or intellectual disability in sibling control analysis. This suggests associations observed in other, less rigorous analyses may have been attributable to familial confounding (aka erroneous finding):

This nationwide cohort study with sibling control analysis examines the association of acetaminophen use during pregnancy with children’s risk of autism, ADHD, and intellectual disability.

If RFK Jr. and co had anything to actually show to back up their claims, there would be a paper in a medical journal, not an announcement about a press conference.
Of course, actually knowing things about stuff was never the point

I tell you what, learn a little bit about cancer and people who think you can cure cancer with diet or supplements do look very silly. This is why cancer biologists have such a hard time not being snarky.
