The overused word in every conversation and panel at TIFF this year is “authenticity.”

I second this!!!
The Hollywood Conference affirmed my love of small, thematic conferences. I saw so many inspiring talks, and there was enough downtime to have actual conversations with people I have known for a long time and with people I just met here. I hope there will be a second iteration. #HWC2025

My heart is with everyone impacted by the devastating floods across Texas—those who have lost loved ones & those still searching.

Many of the impacted families are from right here in Dallas. We’re mourning with you and praying for comfort, healing, & peace in the days ahead.

TX-30 stands with you.

Here’s one example:

Harris County, the 3rd largest county in America by population (5 million) and covering 1,703sqmi, is only permitted ONE MAIL BALLOT DROP BOX, on ELECTION DAY ONLY.

One mail ballot drop box. One day (technically, 12 hours) only. For 2.7M registered voters.
I realize people are mad and frustrated, but that doesn't mean you can be dumb. You can write off millions of Democrats in states like Texas, or you can learn how Republicans have engineered permanent majorities in the state House and Senate and how they've won every statewide election for 30 years.

Y’all my book The Value Gap is at @tiffnet.bsky.social gift shop. What a thrill!! TIFF was an important site of fieldwork for this book & is my fav festival in the entire world. Really feels like coming full circle. (S/o @justinrawlins.bsky.social for the picture!)

Texas film incentive bill moves to the Governor's desk after passage by the House. The ten-year funding horizon represents a significant shift from prior every two year renewal cycle.

I just really need everybody to understand that everything that’s happening in and to the global economy now (and all the businesses and people in it) is the entirely predictable result of the intentional decisions of one guy who doesn’t understand how the global economy works.

As the box office press—or as we call them, the Asterisk People—were changing their tune on #Sinners after its second weekend, @kristenwarner.bsky.social and I had a conversation about the discord around the way they reported on its first.

Long story short? Facts and feelings don't mix.

Female cinematographers are far and few between. Per the annual industry report the Cellulod Ceiling, female DPs shot just 12 percent of the 250 top-grossing movies in 2024. So, when a high-profile male director hires women it’s a big deal; when he keeps hiring women it’s a big fucking deal.
If you’ve seen “Sinners” you may enjoy this (spoiler-ish) interview from @jazzt21.bsky.social with the movie’s terrific cinematographer Autumn Durald Arkapaw, who also shot “The Last Showgirl.” ALL of Coogler’s features have been shot by women DPs. variety.com/2025/artisan...

One thing I wish I had said in this interview re: SINNERS' opening weekend audience being 50% Black and whether that was an indication of its international potential..

"When was the last time anyone asked the same thing about a movie whose primary audience in the US was white?"

She is simply the person I teach everywhere all the time. "Film bodies: gender, genre, excess" is a key text in all of film studies for me.
I'm very sad to hear that we have lost the brilliant feminist film scholar Linda Williams, whose book "Hard Core" was one of the first feminist historical studies of porn. I was lucky to work with her on the "Porn Studies" collection & her books "Screening Sex" & "On The Wire." Rest in peace, Linda.
