Maybe it’s just the Humanities professor in me, but let it be noted that events of today (ahem) have demonstrated the value of being able to assess a large volume of qualitative data and do careful textual analysis with deep attention to context.

Opening the windows this morning for the first time since May.

"Window" derives from Old Norse 'vindauga', a compound word from vindr "wind" + auga "eye". It replaced Old English 'eagþyrl' (eye-hole).
a person is standing in front of a window with the words `` open those windows '' written on it .

Scientists rappelled down cliffs to reach the nests of bearded vultures, which have a diet of bones and paint their feathers red with mud. Inside the nests were perfectly preserved human artifacts from the Middle Ages. By me, for Nat Geo: www.nationalgeographic.com/animals/arti... 🧪
Found: 650-year-old shoe, in vulture nest
Many unexpected human artifacts have been preserved, for centuries, in vulture nests.

This is literally what the actual "siege" of the auxiliary ICE building looks like
September 27, 2025 at 4:21 PM
Stay weird.
As a resident of #Portland it is impossible to capture how unhinged this is. We are a low crime city and the ICE protest "siege" consists of one auxiliary ICE office that normally has at most a dozen weirdos debating what performance art they should use to block a single driveway

“pretty uniformly every single one of these Crusades were fought by a baffling assortment of losers who were totally ineffectual.”

Assigning this in the fall when we read The Knight’s Tale.

On Crusades, or, how not to identify with losers
I think about Crusades a lot because that’s my job. I also think about them a lot because, well, there were a lot of them – which is pretty wild when you consider they didn’t exist as a pheno…

Me after eating 6 mini packs of famous Amos cookies in a row while watching Murderbot:

Am I a big factor in terms of life?
Q: Why do you think your supporters have been so interested in the Epstein story?

TRUMP: I don't understand it. He's dead for a long time. He was never a big factor in terms of life. I don't understand what the fascination is. The credible information has been given. It's pretty boring stuff.

“It’s not just the cries of birds; sounds are particularly eerie in this regard precisely because they travel, unattached from their source, carried over the wind and through the trees where the acoustics distort and refract them, until they start to seem unnatural and otherworldly.”
My latest column for @atlasobscura.com is up:

I returned to the town where I went to college, in search of a mysterious noise that plagued the community in February 2016, known as “The Forest Grove Sound.”

…and I discovered something I wasn’t expecting to learn at all.
Listening for Echoes of the Forest Grove Sound
A physics expert and audio engineer may have solved the mystery of a strange noise that rattled an Oregon town in 2016.

One of my favourite objects is this gorgeous frog purse made between 1650-1680. A gap below the face allows an opening with a drawstring, and the legs are formed with wire covered in padding. The body is silver-gilt thread, whilst the eyes are formed from black beads. Held at the Museum of London.

St. Bernard? How ‘bout a hero butterfly?
A man and his dog were hiking Fee Glacier when he fell into a 26-foot hole. A rescue team arrived but struggled to find their exact location until one of them spotted the tiny pup. He never left his owner's side. Thanks to the dog's loyalty, his human was saved and flown to a hospital. 14/10 for all
