Must read piece on @carpentries.carpentries.org 's brave and principled decision to turn down a $1.5M NSF grant rather than compromise their core value of inclusion.

Kudos to The Carpentries, and let's support them and others who won't cross the first line.
I spoke with Kari Jordan and Erin Becker of The Carpentries about why they declined a $1.5M NSF grant intended to expand data science training. Their decision highlights the growing intersection of #science, #DEI, and federal policy.

I don’t want the NIH to be fucking profitable, I want it to cure cancer and Alzheimer’s
TAPPER: 14 Republicans say you're risking undermining critical research by holding up NIH funding

VOUGHT: If they were a company, their stock price would in shambles. They in some respects caused the pandemic. You have an entire institute that does nothing more than DEI research at the NIH.

Sooooo… ICE now has a bigger budget than the NIH which funds almost all of the biomedical research in America.

This is precisely where the priorities of this administration lie.
The House bill increases funding for ICE but $45 billion which is 5 times their current budget of $9 billion. We are seeing the rise of a fascist police state with the ICE gestapo as its vanguard.

It seems like the head of the Department of Homeland Security should know what habeas corpus is. Especially since it is a pillar of the Constitution, the WH Policy Director has said publicly that they may suspend it, and DHS will have to enforce that. bsky.app/profile/atru...
HASSAN: What is habeas corpus?

NOEM: Habeas corpus is a constitutional right that the president has to be able to remove people from this country

😌 Relieved to see that Europe continues to choose #science, and with it, #openness, #reason, and #progress. In a world where some major powers like the USA under Trump seem to head in the opposite direction, this brings a sense of hope
We will put forward a 500 million package for 2025-2027 to make Europe a magnet for researchers.

As well as ambitious proposals for R&I in the next EU budget.

We will also offer the best and brightest the right incentives to come to Europe ↓
