"It's hard to see [accessibility issues on new .gov sites] as anything but a deliberate choice. That also sends a clear message of who this administration feels has a place in American life, who is worthy enough to access information and services and who is not worth their time."
Last week I hade the opportunity to speak at @dotgovdesign.bsky.social about accessibility in the civic tech space, why we should all start using assistive tech, and why improving our skills as practitioners is so critically important in this moment. jaredcunha.com/blog/dotgov-...

on bsky i’m nobody. irl i’m an accomplished industry technologist and government bureaucrat who is uniquely qualified to advise academic committees on the relevance and need for their major, minor, certificate, and graduate programs. and i do!
My hot take is that over the next 10 years, we're going to see more emphasis on and investment in the humanities at Ivy League and other fancy schools just as state schools and small privates continue to decimate and even eliminate the humanities.
"While other universities report that the humanities are shrinking, at Berkeley, the opposite is true. The music major is the fastest-growing major on campus. We are finding bigger classrooms because film is exploding. English is back to the numbers we saw 15 years ago. We are hiring" bit.ly/4ohKuOe

[vibrates with pride in second-rate public land grant university system]
Really important to stress that the Crown Jewels of the US higher education system were never the Ivies or elite SLACs (other countries have equivalents of these) but the well-funded, large, cheap, and excellently staffed public state university systems bringing high quality education to the masses.
One of the bragging rights that the US ed system had in the 20th century is that we didn't have education tracks. Essentially, any kid could go to a CC or state school & major in whatever they wanted to (obviously an oversimplification). I fear this aspect of the American dream is dying.

I wrote for @theintercept.com about how prosecuting transportation of these pamphlets is a danger to all writers, journalists, and Americans.

Possession of words is not a crime, even with intent to distribute.

a couple weeks back i had a few similar interactions on here that left a bad taste in my mouth. the algtorithmic-tech-whatever of online comms shapes exposure to content that we can’t control, we DO still have a lot quite a LOT of power to establish tenor & expectations of personal interactions.

One of the major fruits of research is delight. Think of how often you’ve read about a discovery and really enjoyed it. Often the most pleasurable kind of news. Public delight isn’t discussed enough as one of the major outputs of funding research.
I strongly recommend everyone do research sometimes 𝘫𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘧𝘶𝘯.

Look something up on Wikipedia. Go to the little citation. Follow it. Read the article it's referencing. Follow links to the original interview. Read the paper written by the interviewee

It genuinely makes you appreciate journalism

i grade for a course on internet culture that’s designed to be one of the first writing-heavy courses freshmen take. this is a D essay.
Pretty sure I could write a 10,000 word academic article just unpacking all the misdirections in this one paragraph.

Wrong about intelligence, wrong about tech development, wrong about the political economy of AI, etc.

These arguments should never have escaped discussion board containment.

This is one of the rare times where we really do need retired senior generals and admirals to speak out--Dempsey and Mullen should step up to articulate that these are illegal orders.
The JAGs have been fired, so we need for former leaders to tell us all.
"military officials may be getting directed to execute potentially illegal actions. Given this, how can we not hear from a top official who may have already concluded they’re being asked to carry out the unacceptable?"
