It just reminds me of the dead matter on the forest floor before the fire comes through. Agatha Christie was writing country house murders into the 1960s, and just a few years later the entire world her fiction lived in was gone.

But the thing that really bothered me was the weird time thing where these are all former cold warriors in the winter of their career. Except these are people in their vigorous 60’s, not dead or in their 90s with an oxygen tube tucked behind their ears.

I've been saying it: they're bourgeois and above all else value etiquette, etiquette is very gendered, they consider us to be very uncouth, and are embarrassed by us.
