70% of the additional spending from removing the two-child limit will go to families who are in work. This is targeting support for low-income working households who are being priced out of a decent standard of living despite doing everything asked of them.

Money Box wants to hear from people who’ve had letters asking for Simple Assessment payments. HMRC has sent some savers 2 letters - one earlier this year & one now that includes tax on savings. If you’re one of those people - please email felicity.hannah@bbc.co.uk and thanks a lot in advance.

Been pushing for improvements to Simple Assessment for years, really needs fixing.

It's shocking how much consensus there is amongst tax policy wonks and economists of Left and Right on the tax reforms the UK needs to boost growth & make the tax system fairer

More shocking: they're reforms that are never mentioned by any politicians

Stop talking about wealth taxes — make these reforms instead
Any sane discussion of changes that both right and left could agree on is being crowded out by tax populism

🧵 NEW: Is Britain really a high tax country?

Our collective tax bill is at its highest share of GDP since the 1940s

But actually, the tax and NI paid by the average worker are at their lowest in decades.

What’s going on?

So what was the tax scheme that bankrupted Frankie Dettori, and who is the unnamed adviser who sold it to him?

And why should we feel (slightly) sorry for Dettori?

Quick thread.

This is causing so much confusion. As @paullewismoney.bsky.social says it is a change to the requirement to file a tax return, the trading allowance (amount you can earn tax free) remains at £1k. The timing depends on when HMRC can built a reporting service into its app/personal tax account.
Do you have a side hustle that brings in between £1k and £3k? The govt will end the need for you to fill in a tax return. bit.ly/4iC1jAU Are you one of 300,000 people it says will benefit? DM me or email moneybox@bbc.co.uk. PS tax will still be due. Many details unclear
Government set to scrap tax returns for 300,000 Brits with 'side-hustles'
Some 300,000 people will no longer have to file tax returns, in new measures set to be announced later today.

#Savers!! Updated guidance from HMRC today.

If you have tax on #interest for 2023/24 tax year (and are not in self-assessment) - it could take until 31 March 2025 for #HMRC to get a tax computation out to you

Why no posts today? I have been struggling, grappling, wrestling with my self-assessment form! I am one of the luckless 500,000 self-employed who must account for more than one year of profits in 2023/24 - in my case 23 months. And it has been turning my brain inside out.

Let’s talk about Direct File.

It’s a free, easy way for people to file their taxes directly online with IRS.

You keep your tax refund — rather than paying $150 to a sleazy tax prep company.

It’s more efficient!

But these Republicans want you to keep wasting money on TurboTax.
