Historian of Canada, gender, politics, graphic satire. Writing (apparently interminably) about Grip magazine.
Ok, odd question but has anyone been in the confessional in St Michael’s cathedral in Toronto? Or seen a picture of the inside?

This is the best, most logical interpretation I’ve seen about what’s going on
Those trying to understand the tariffs as economic policy are dangerously naive.

No, the tariffs are a tool to collapse our democracy. A means to compel loyalty from every business that will need to petition Trump for relief.

This is a great piece. But it’s also fascinating that the marriage/SA allegory for US/Canada relations still has so much power over us. “Annexation is not marriage. It’s rape.” www.thespec.com/opinion/cont...

Here’s another much more salacious depiction of Miss Canada and Uncle Sam. Richard Cartwright the Liberal finance minister is an “Arab” selling her into (sexual) slavery. 1891 Conservative campaign poster.

US annexation of Canada was often imagined as a marital (read: sexual) union by 19th and 20th c cartoonists. Bengough uses the motif in this 19 Jan 1889. It’s funny b/c Miss Canada (who’s particularly comely in her toque and blanket coat) rebuffs US’s come on. Girl just wants to shop.

JW Bengough drew dozens of cartoons about US-Canada tariff policy. This one from Feb 26, 1876 critiques Mackenzie’s and the Liberal’s free trade policy in the face of American economic aggression.

“Crisis” implies that at some time in the past the (im)balance of power between the sexes was just right, Goldilocks style.

We just saw a crystal clear demonstration of DJT’s “might makes right” attitude. He kept saying “you have no cards.” All he understands is brute power. He is the CINC of the world’s largest military & so everyone must kneel. He and Putin plan to carve up their adjacent territories b/c they can.

I was talking American politics with a smart group of friends on the weekend and we all agreed that by just saying stuff that was objectively true made us sound completely bananas.
I'm convinced this is a genuine problem. The reality of Trump is so cartoonishly, comically awful that an absolutely neutral description sounds like a hit piece, even to me. So if you're at all predisposed to think of press as biased, factual reporting looks like some relentless vendetta.
feel like one problem of Trump is that describing him objectively sounds like you're insulting him

I’m pretty sure the Gaza video started as satire. The Trump team has consistently appropriated satirical takes to muddy the waters. When we don’t know what’s irony and what’s fact, anything becomes possible.

This is how it’s done. Political cartoonists that endlessly play on “Trump is a little bitch” with all the misogynist and queer-phobic connotations that entails could learn something here.
