US annexation of Canada was often imagined as a marital (read: sexual) union by 19th and 20th c cartoonists. Bengough uses the motif in this 19 Jan 1889. It’s funny b/c Miss Canada (who’s particularly comely in her toque and blanket coat) rebuffs US’s come on. Girl just wants to shop.
