Here’s another much more salacious depiction of Miss Canada and Uncle Sam. Richard Cartwright the Liberal finance minister is an “Arab” selling her into (sexual) slavery. 1891 Conservative campaign poster.

US annexation of Canada was often imagined as a marital (read: sexual) union by 19th and 20th c cartoonists. Bengough uses the motif in this 19 Jan 1889. It’s funny b/c Miss Canada (who’s particularly comely in her toque and blanket coat) rebuffs US’s come on. Girl just wants to shop.

I know this sort of thing is a joke but you can imagine how deeply hurtful it is for Albertans
