Me, working at my desk, when Logan starts barking.
Me: *pulls up security app and opens front door camera feed *
Logan: BORK BORK BORK
Me: There’s nobody there!
Logan: BORK BORK BORK
Me: There’s a truck on the other side of the street!
Logan: BORK BORK BORK
Me: Here, go chase kibble
Logan: 😋🥰🤐

Hey everyone, you’ve been asking me to run for office for a while, so guess what?

I’m running for California State Assembly!

Now, I don’t like asking for money, but we gotta pay for this somehow, and if everyone throws in $7 we’ll have the resources to run one hell of a race, so, uh, do the thing.

Just saw someone repost this so I thought I'd resurface it for everyone. It's still relevant.
Saw someone upbraiding someone else for having a hobby while the world is on fire, and, my friends:

1. The world is ever on fire, this is today's conflagration;

2. If you don't find time for rest and joy the fire will consume you;

3. Don't let people shame you for being an entire human.

This is tied up in the idea that in the United States there are no poor people, there are just temporarily embarrassed millionaires (to quote Steinbeck). The right in the US has done very well in selling the myth of the American Dream, and mostly to the detriment of those dreaming of it.
It is extremely frustrating to talk about something like a wealth cap tied to 100x the minimum wage over a lifetime career, and people’s kneejerk reaction is “but what if that affects me?” and I can promise you that you aren’t making $180million (to use California as an example)

Something I noted a couple of times here today at GenCon is that I think it's important for publishers to invest in "midlist" and/or newer authors because the cash cows at the top can die, stop producing, or blow up in scandals, and if you don't have a stable of writers to step up, you're screwed.
Publishing is not an industry, I’d say, that has any sort of aftercare. If your debut flops or soars, if you go from frontlist to mid-list, if you are on prize lists or not. It’s a crapshoot. And part of the issue is supply and demand. There are 80+ books to choose from below. No one can keep up.

The big hitters of the literary world draw headlines for their book deals. But the reality of writing fiction for a living is an altogether less lucrative existence

Working on altering a project so we can avoid digging or boring too close to endangered tortoise burrows (25’ is absolute closest we can be), and it’s slightly annoying, but knowing we’re saving SIX turtle burrows/allowing endangered wildlife to flourish feels a million times better 💕

i’ve worked in tech for a long time and “how can we send pushes in a way that won’t make people shut them off entirely” is something we think about that texas apparently doesn’t
Apparently Texas sends mass “Blue Alerts” to phones every time a cop is in danger.

And a lot of people are so understandably sick of it that they’ve *turned emergency alerts off entirely*, meaning that they aren’t getting actually-useful notifications.
