This week on the blog! We're looking at the movie motif of having a whole bunch of archers 'fire' at once and discussing what is volley fire for and both why archers couldn't do it and why they wouldn't do it even if they could!

Collections: Why Archers Didn’t Volley Fire
This week we’re looking at a specific visual motif common in TV and film: the arrow volley. You know the scene: the general readies his archers, he orders them to ‘draw!’ and then…

Here. I wrote about the point of deciding to just fight and die on a hill rather than endlessly calculating the best moment to put up an opposition.

Are you Wide Awake yet?
Unilaterally shutting down USAID via Executive Order and merging it with State is openly illegal and Dems should immediately converge on D.C. and call for protests if Trump tries to do it.

This is open corruption. Paramount pays the president tens of millions of dollars for a completely frivolous legal claim, and then Trump gives Paramount a pass on antitrust law. Trump isn’t enforcing the laws, he’s collecting a toll from corporations in exchange for looking the other way.
Paramount is in talks to settle a $10 billion lawsuit Donald Trump filed against CBS for how "60 Minutes" edited an interview with Kamala Harris, as executives think agreeing to pay Trump would ease Paramount's merger with Skydance, New York Times reports: www.nytimes.com/2025/01/30/b...
Paramount in Settlement Talks With Trump Over ‘60 Minutes’ Lawsuit
A settlement, if reached, would be an extraordinary concession by a major U.S. media company to a sitting president.

Just dumb to think money is the problem now. Corporations aren’t paying Trump for influence, they’re paying him because he’s blackmailing them. It’s not a bribe, it’s protection money.
"People don’t cheer for chaos when they feel like justice is possible. But right now... the Supreme Court is corrupt, voting feels useless, and the people in power are funded by the very corporations they’re supposed to regulate."

This was my experience of Rome. You can be walking down the tiniest street and then out of nowhere some guy on a motorbike will come racing down. Still better than US cities but just because something is old and organic doesn’t mean it’s pedestrian friendly
Noisy motorcycles, cars that don't yield outside of the touristy core, and within the touristy core, pedestrians walking single-family on four-foot wide sidewalks alongside streams of endless congestion. Many plazas remain parking lots, many streets that should be closed remain car sewers, etc.

If we want better fashion culture in the US, we have to lower the cost of housing and commercial real estate, support independent craftspeople, build denser neighborhoods, improve walkability, and get rid of overly restrictive zoning laws. Let kook culture thrive.
