Build Your Game Engine

I'm a Senior UI Programmer for AAA games, and I'm writing a step-by-step guide for creating your own game engine in C++!
I just published chapter 3 of my book, which is all about adding external dependencies: cohost.org/BuildYourGam...
Chapter 3: Adding external dependencies
Now that we have our main loop, it's time to add external dependencies to our project. Although I've marketed this book as writing a game engine "from scratch," I really mean that we're going to outso...

I worked on this game four years ago. It was a baffling project, even back then.
I played some of Skull & Bones and what can you even say about this. I am baffled, genuinely

I've never liked the taste of alcohol (nor what it does to you), so I've been killing this challenge for almost 35 years!

It's finally time! ✨ I've published the first two chapters of my book about making a small game engine from scratch in C++: cohost.org/BuildYourGam...

So frustrating that there's things we could do on a society-level to help with not just Covid but all sorts of tranmissible illnesses. People shouldn't just accept that work and public transport makes you ill all the time!

Also having literallly any way to get a booster in the UK would be nice.
I dunno, I can get frustrated with exaggerated claims of COVID risk and impacts on here but on the other hand it's wild that we're not seeing any movement toward paid sick leave, better ventilation, free tests and better booster rollouts. Plus the bizarre gaslighting of people with long covid.

Terrific author’s note from C K McDonnell. Automating a process is stupid if the process is the point.

Also, if a book lasts into further reprints, is read maybe, hopefully, into the future, these notes will be valuable, lived history.

One more week until I release the first two chapters of my book about making your own game engine in C++ as blog posts and three chapters as a PDF and epub! 🫣

Oh okay, the giant pot of soup at Substack only has a few nuggets of shit floating in it. That's fine dining, I guess!
The Substack founders leaked details of their meeting with @caseynewton.bsky.social to another Substack publication and appear to have gone from “we have nazis here and we accept them” to “actually they don’t exist.”

As a 34-year-old, the only RPG I finished this year was eight hours long (the excellent Small Saga)
Every games writer is spiritually obligated to write this exact op/ed when they turn 30.

I played the demo of The Invincible at the time, and while I love love *love* the aesthetic of it all, I don't think I actually liked playing it.

Sticks with you for a loooong time, though
I played The Invincible for review a little while back, and the page is now live! Lovely and compact, well-delivered first-person sci-fi romp. Best new aesthetic this side of Cyberpunk, Alien Isolation, and even Starfield's thing (ugh..."nasapunk")

Programming is chaotic magic. There are no rules. You ask a game dev “Can the player summon a giant demon that bursts from the ground in an explosion of lava?” and they’ll say “sure, that’s easy” and then you’ll ask “can the player wear a scarf?” and they’ll go “oof”

UI: We've finally collated all necessary data from the backend to display "Splorg Multiplier +3" in the inventory!

Backend: SplorgeItemsAPI v3 is deprecated; use MasterItemsAPI v22 with authentication and backend microservices instead

Game designer: Splorg is now Zoink, and also outdated
Game dev is simple

Game designer: I addressed that edge case you pointed out on that design. it's now a completely different design.

Narrative designer: but what's the STORY behind these darkness shards that can be exchanged for malfeasance fragments?

Artist: [crying while drawing 53 hats]

I've been thinking about "if buying isn't owning, piracy isn't stealing" for twelve hours straight now.
If buying isn't owning, piracy isn't stealing
this is exactly why i still buy discs in 2023. it's crazy to think that we are reaching a point where piracy will be the only option to own media once dvds and blu-rays are gone.

I think hbomb's theory on why plagiarism happens is right: it's because you hold art and the people who make it in contempt, all of it is beneath you

I've been playing Dragon Age: Inquisition for over seventy hours with no end I sight and finished Small Saga in just over eight. One of these RPGs is a tedious drawn-out slog and the other is a tight narrative experience I would recommend to anyone.
how to tell game PRs that word count is not a measure of narrative quality in a game, just a measure of how the industry is obsessed with padding out play time, false ‘value for money’ over play experience & other such capitalist nonsense that doesn’t apply to any other medium that actually edits
