Damn, that's such a good observation.
In early 2024, I got to speak to Deans from up & down the West Coast of the US & Canada about "AI". I told them that the only value of ChatGPT for university administrators is as a contrast-dye test to show where resources are lacking.

"World's first potential trillionaire has killed 600,000 people, including 400,000 children" is the only headline that anyone should ever read about Elon Musk
One analytical model shows that, as of November 5th, the dismantling of U.S.A.I.D. has already caused the deaths of 600,000 people, two-thirds of them children. https://newyorkermag.visitlink.me/jUzNSc

Google and Apple should add a device-level AI permission, just like it does for other potentially invasive privacy features, like location, to their phones. www.eff.org/deeplinks/2...
When AI and Secure Chat Meet, Users Deserve Strong Controls Over How
Both Google and Apple are cramming new AI features into their phones and other devices, and neither company has offered clear ways to control which apps those AI systems can access. Recent issues

Algo selection really is pushing The City & The City from fiction into non-fiction, and I’m not sure how a democracy can really function when two polities live in separate realities.

I also don’t know how we put the algo genie back in the bottle.

But also seems likely something we need to address!

I don't think anyone outside of universities, pharma and biotech, independent research institutions have any idea of what is happening right now. If you haven't sounded the alarm among your friends, family and colleagues, now is the time to do it.

Someone’s going public about this
Northwestern has not received any NIH funds since March. No written communication about why or what can be done. Thank you Ben Singer for raising awareness at #ATS2025

In political communication research, we call this "indexing" (original citation here: doi.org/10.1111/j.14...) It is the thesis that the mainstream news will cover topics and opinions in proportion to how much they are expressed by politicians and other government sources.
If Dems act like it's not a big deal, the press will also act like it's not a big deal. If the Dems act like it's a shocking (and continuing!) scandal, the press will give it breathless live coverage. This is the perfect illustration of how Dem weakness is dooming the country.
