Politicians are terrified of an electorate they think is far more authoritarian and angry and right wing than it actually is, because they are out of touch because the literal media - the thing that mediates between public and polity - is corrupted

It's hard to think of another policy that is so fundamentally a free lunch as congestion pricing is
Year 1 data on congestion pricing in Manhattan…

* Vehicle traffic: -11%
* Foot traffic: +3.4%
* Storefront vacancy: -0.9%
* Pollution: -22%
* Revenue for mass transit: $548M

So YES this has been a huge success.

Interesting that the BBC will call National Rally "Far Right" (in an article about Bardella meeting Farage) - when they would never use that term for Reform. Their policies are very similar. If anything Reform's are more authoritarian.

Our cover this week

“Europe should take heart and recognise its own strength. Its military budget is already four times larger than Russia’s; its economy is ten times larger. Far from shying away from a financial contest with the Kremlin, Europe should embrace it—and win the war”

And if you think this is all coincidence, consider that Cary Grant was very close friends with Cubby Broccoli - and best man at his wedding. He was first choice for Bond. The deal fell through because Grant wouldn't commit to a five-movie deal, worried he was too old. The rest, as they say... 3/3

Every time I watch North by Northwest I am struck by the proufound but totally unacknowldged influence Hitch had on the Bond franchise. (Dr No came three years later.) This gibson-drinking, unflappable, debonair man, in an impeccably tailored suit, fakes his own death so he can act unseen. 1/3

U.S. District Judge April Perry is now questioning DOJ lawyer Eric Hamilton about the National Guard deployment. She starts by noting the 14 CA troops, 200 TX troops and 300 IL troops.

But she asks if those numbers could increase, and whether the troops could go elsewhere in Illinois.
Hamilton is done. We're expecting questions from Perry now.

ICE admits that up to 50% of arrests in its Chicago raids are "collateral.” These aren't statistics. They are parents taken from their children, neighbors taken from our communities. When does a "collateral" U.S. citizen child's trauma matter? This isn't law enforcement; it's a campaign of terror.
