Student: Teacher, why do we learn?

Socrates: For life!

Freire: For liberation!

Dewey: For democracy!

Neoliberal EduWonks: To mitigate overhead costs for employers and increase future projections of GDP!
It’s really absurd that we’ve reached a point where the “common sense” view of education is that its primary purpose is to lower the future onboarding/training costs for companies hiring new employees.

Whelp.
Hearing that nearly all the employees in the statistics agency inside the Education Department -- NCES (National Center for Education Statistics) -- have lost their jobs. Rumors that the NAEP test -- the nation's report card -- will no longer be run by NCES. This info is not confirmed.

Let's be VERY clear here.

Trump does *not* have the authority to withhold federal funding from public schools for what they teach. The 2015 Every Student Succeeds Act is very explicitly clear on this. #EduSky

Trump looks to withhold school aid over lessons on equity and gender. Can he?
The federal government is barred by law from mandating what curriculum schools use. But Trump’s order about “discriminatory equity ideology” and “gender ideology” indicates he wants to use his adminis...

This is terrible

NCAN devotes itself to making college accessible

It is a big, big deal for them to recommend that filing the FAFSA is too dangerous for some families
Immigration & Education:

This notice from the National College Attainment Network went out Thurs., warning immigrant & mixed-status families that it may not be safe for them to file a FAFSA, b/c data may not be protected & people could be targeted.

I mean, yeah that's what Margaret Spellings would say. You get 'mixed reactions' if you sample like that.

Of course, teaching experience is not a requirement to run the Dept. of Ed. but it surely helps to have meaningful experience in the educational system before running the educational system...
Reactions to McMahon as ed secretary are mixed.

“Absurdity ... sounds like, ‘Let’s put the lady that led mostly faux entertainment wrestling in charge.’”

vs.

“When people say, ‘Well she’s not a teacher,’ I say, ‘The department is not a school.”
