In the wake of the president’s abuses of power, it won’t be enough for politicians to merely orate about restoring the rule of law. The only way to overcome that skepticism is with action.

2/ The government punishing broadcasters or intruding into their editorial processes for refusing to air a program is just as harmful as punishing them for airing it.

Two wrongs don’t vindicate a constitutional right.

1/ Broadcasters have a First Amendment right to decide what programming to air. If Congress is worried about the federal government shaking down broadcasters, it should investigate the government, not the broadcaster.

The remedy to government interference in media isn’t **more** interference.

If you’re rich and not a coward, this is what you’d refer to as a “market opportunity” to dominate a media ecosystem that’s about to be covered in grotesque government slop. To be a pop of color in a sea of beige will be easier than ever. People will flock to it. You gotta be a little brave, though.

There’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for people to build on the rubble of what’s being destroyed before our eyes. Private corporations bending over to forcefeed everyone government-approved speech is evil and amoral, but more than anything this creates boring, inauthentic, unwatchable shit.

By the way, you can in fact run a media business where people give you money for goods and services. 56k+ people give The Onion ~$100 and we give them a year of newspapers. This business didn’t exist last year in this way. People will pay for good shit. Now’s the time to break glass and go for it.

Becoming increasingly clear we’re gonna have to build a parallel infrastructure for all the media we really love. The reason all of this is happening under the color of law is hyperconsolidation, dissent being traded straight up for merger approval, or fear of harassment.

A free and democratic society cannot silence comedians because the President doesn’t like what they say.

This is an attack on free speech and cannot be allowed to stand.

All elected officials need to speak up and push back on this undemocratic act.

Not really an overstatement to say that the test of a free society is whether or not comedians can make fun of the country's leader on TV without repurcussions.
