About fifty years ago, NASA strapped a message in a bottle to a rocket and flung it into the deep dark
It wasn’t supposed to go this far, but it did. Long past its mission, it’s still out there so far away now that a simple hello takes a day to reach it, and another day to hear if it says hello back

The state of the union is that the President is spitting in the face of the law.

He is letting an unelected billionaire fire cancer researchers and wreck federal agencies like the Social Security Administration at will.

I won't be attending tomorrow's Joint Address.

"Still, every university remained publicly silent. The chief sponsor of Senate Bill 1 took notice. Republican State Sen. Jerry Cirino reportedly said that IUC’s neutrality over the bill was a sign that the presidents were at least not overwhelmingly opposed to his vision for higher education reform"
Ohio’s SB1 bans faculty strikes and eliminates diversity efforts, among other things.

Ohio’s higher ed lobbying group told colleges to avoid picking fights over it and to try to get more funding instead

Here’s why Ohio university presidents stayed quiet on Senate Bill 1
The lobbying group for the state’s public universities advised them to sit on the sidelines over Senate Bill 1, records show.

House Rs just passed the budget resolution, the first step in their process to enact a bill that'd kick millions off Medicaid & cut SNAP down to just $1.60 per person per meal on avg while cutting taxes for the top 0.1% by $278k - all while increasing the debt

Any talk you hear from the current administration about making the US more competitive in science and technology is utter bullshit. What they are doing is sabotaging our country for years if not decades to come.

between NIH and “stop all DEI [which is anything] or get no funding,” I think they just don’t want universities to exist.

All those universities that bravely took up those positions of "institutional neutrality" a few months ago, what do you do now?

Instead of "don't cut our funding," our message should be: hands off higher ed.

You want to restrict what professors can say in the classroom? Hands off.

You want to ban diversity offices? Hands off.

You want to cut our research funding? Hands off.

Hands. Off. Higher. Ed.

Some higher ed organizations who are loudly circling the wagons against federal funding cuts were oddly silent or circumspect about the earlier attacks on CRT and DEI.

I wish there was a better understanding that these attacks are coming because we failed to repel those.

I think it's good to remember voting (or abstaining) isn't a symbolic representation of your values or even an endorsement of the politician your voting for. It's a strategic decision with real-world outcomes for the people you know and love, which hopefully includes yourself.
