Today’s Transgender Day of Remembrance was very emotional, especially with what the UCP is doing in taking away transgender children’s rights and using the notwithstanding clause. So many people showed up tonight. 🏳️‍⚧️ #transrightsarehumanrights

On this Trans Day of Remembrance, I hope Albertans will remember that trans kids and teens are living breathing humans who just want to be themselves, without fear of hate and discrimination. Demonizing kids merely to score political points in some weird culture war is craven and cruel.

With the preemptive use of S. 33, Bill 9 attempts to shield 3 statutes that form a fundamental intrusion into the relationships between trans kids and their parents, doctors/medical professionals, teachers/schools, and sport communities.

We stand to assert our forceful, sustaining opposition.

One of the “activist” groups the premier refers to is the Canadian Medical Assn. The other two, Egale + Skipping Stone, backed up their injunction claim with reams of medical and other evidence. Evidence that the gov’t itself is lacking. The UCP is the real activist here. ablawg.ca/2025/11/19/t...

They could. They didn't have to. But they did it anyway.

Why did the UCP use the notwithstanding clause to strip trans folks of their Charter rights?

Laziness? Impatience? Vengence?

Motives matter little. The impact is by design: maximal harm in minimal time.

Let’s be clear on this: Danielle Smith is ripping up the Charter of Rights & Freedoms to take away rights from the most vulnerable people in Alberta. And she’s doing it to protect herself from the militant wing of her own party, nothing more. Hope it’s all she’s ever remembered for in the long run

My kid’s first gender clinic appointment is in December. I can’t believe this government that claims to be all about “parents rights” is going to deny their two supportive parents and the world class medical experts we have in Calgary any say in what their health care will be.

Pause to listen to these words.
Once again, Alberta’s UCP Government plans to suspend Charter Rights of Albertans.

First to attack teachers’ rights, now trans youth.

The Justice Minister proudly said his voice is the final voice on this matter.

It is not. The voice of the people is the final voice.

I thought I didn’t have strong feelings about the practice, but I paid attention today. I was moved by the ceremony. Something important happened. I saw people embracing, weeping, comforting one other, and celebrating openly. People held their heads up, feeling seen. Let’s protect this in our city.
Calgary's Flag Policy means any country recognized by Canada may have their flag flown at City Hall on their national day. But national flag-raisings are now creating division. Next week, we’ll move to end national flag-raisings at City Hall to keep this a safe, welcoming space for all. #yyccc
