With the preemptive use of S. 33, Bill 9 attempts to shield 3 statutes that form a fundamental intrusion into the relationships between trans kids and their parents, doctors/medical professionals, teachers/schools, and sport communities.

We stand to assert our forceful, sustaining opposition.

Seeing the Palestinian Flag on our civic plaza is dignifying. It feels like a small but important bit of progress. Even when the flag was there on an empty plaza by afternoon, it felt affirming. I urge #YYCCC to reflect and consult on this policy. Take care and time.

“This is an historic day. A day of celebration.”

“For the first time, a Palestinian flag is rising over our city.”

“Our identity as a community is recognized.”

“Even through unimaginable loss, we cannot be erased. Our stories and identity matter.”

“Look up, my friends. What do you see?”

Salute to my pal, Agnès. As we have in recent years, we rode together to mark the finale of her season, and in a way that only Agnès can, she took me on a route with vicious climbs and killed my legs, but she’s all smiles so 🫡

Congratulations to Alberta students, showing up for public education and teachers. I crossed paths with the protest yesterday — so loud with positive energy and honks in support.

Shout out to this student with the bike helmet linked to his backpack, showing up and being visible. He knows what’s up.

You did this to me. I ride the Brompton like no bike ever before. You ought to think about a warning label or something for that brand.

“Warning: this bike will fold you.”

This week marks my 400th consecutive week of bicycling. This was unconsciously achieved and affirms that bicycles are a convenient, mechanically reliable, and attractive mode of transport through the seasons. Coupled with safe, reliable infrastructure, bicycling is an easy choice.

Starting in on a new book today, Life After Cars, by @sgoodyear.bsky.social, @brooklynspoke.bsky.social, @naparstek.bsky.social.

I dedicate this read to a day when vacant land parcels are met with more creative ideas than surface parking.

Ripping through urban spaces at night offers a unique bicycling and social experience. 🚲✨

Still seasonally mild.

When we were in Banff, Sam and I took an hour to go bowling one evening. Sam was hungry for a win. We bowled three games, and on the last, he left everything on the lanes. Even though I had an exceptional game (for me), he topped me by bowling a 219 for the win! He’s our house champion now.🏆

Fresh air, fresh snow, fresh memories: another wonderful and active trip to Banff. We love coming here, and we’ll be back again. 🚲❄️🏔️🌲

It’s been a stressful, strenuous year. Things at home are good and strong, but other compartments of life take their toll.

I’m grateful for a bit of time off work this week and the unexpected opportunity to escape with (or perhaps into) Beatrice and Sam.

“The Palestinian cause is not a cause for Palestinians only, but a cause for every revolutionary, wherever he is, as a cause of the exploited and oppressed masses in our era.”

The words of Ghassan Kanafani’s are heard today at Calgary’s Rally and March for Palestine.

Agnès and I are going into autumn without compromise. We were at it early in the crisp air and morning light to sneak in a ride to Bragg Creek. We were rewarded with pleasing scenes, recovery coffee, and warm conversation.

I owe this morning’s community connection to you, doc. It fills my cup.

“A community’s orbit depends on both the gravity & period of its rituals. So I roast and grind the beans. And it fills my cup.”

Happy to lend support to Bikeapalooza, a community event by @nagwanyyc.bsky.social and her Calgary-Glenmore constit team.

People lingered after the bike ride and lunch to connect with one another and community orgs. Pretty remarkable community engagement (500 registrants). Congrats, organizers!

Canada’s recognition of a State of Palestine matters, but it is not itself an action that meets our international obligations to end Israel’s genocide in Gaza, break the siege on Gaza, and impose a two-way arms embargo and sanctions against Israel.

We take to the streets still. Join us.

It’s the same dividing and geopolitical forces that underlie each of our causes. Grateful for this broad gathering that genuinely explored and expressed our interconnections and shared aspiration for life nurturing future.
