Mr. Antiwar President has us inches away from a Civil War at home and a nuclear war abroad in defense of an ally that is starting random hot regional wars to detract from its ongoing genocide. I’m sure all of this will just naturally cool off.

its crazy how dominant germany was in science (especially chemistry) in the 19th century, it was basically the international language for scientists, people came from all over the world to train at heidelberg etc, and then....
There are 2 previous historical cases of countries destroying their science and universities, crippling them for decades: Lysenkoism in the USSR and Nazi Germany. The Trump administration will be the 3rd.
It's not just budgets but research, institutions, expertise, and training the next generation.

darkly funny that we might actually get a falling out between these two because Putin naturally took Trump’s election as license to do whatever the fuck he wanted and Trump is getting increasingly annoyed that Putin won’t gift-wrap him the Nobel Peace Prize he desperately wants

If the current crop of Democrats were leading the Union in 1861, the Civil War would’ve been over by September and the capital of the United States would now be Richmond.
Doing "Everything is normal" cosplay in Congress - debating GOP bills, confirming Trump nominees - while the administration is *arresting members of your caucus is not a bad sign, it is an epitaph. No group of people who refuse to fight *for their own skins* will fight for anyone else.

Wonder what Debord or Baudrillard would have to say about this 🫠
The Department of Homeland Security is considering taking part in a TV program that would have immigrants go through a series of challenges to get American citizenship, officials said on Friday. The agency was happy to review “out-of-the-box pitches,” a spokeswoman said. nyti.ms/3ZkofNO

I read a blog about how people used ChatGPT for therapy and how dangerous it is.

I wanted to see what would happen if I ran this same hypothetical and folks… run away as fast as you can. I legitimately think it’s one of the worst products/services we’ve ever created
People using AI to cheat is one thing but what’s even more alarming is people talking about how they talk to ChatGPT all day, how they use it to write text messages to their friends, how it has usurped their own humanity at a time when we need people to resist tech fascism. That’s the real horror

A LOT of people do not want to hear it but in the United States at least, food has never been safer to eat, not to mention tastier
We are living in one of the few times in human history where you can buy a loaf of bread and if it says it’s made with wheat flour and salt and yeast and water and nothing else, it’s probably made from just those ingredients, and some people want to END this.

is there any scientific achievement with a more obvious and in-your-face positive track record than vaccines?
this antivax stuff is genuinely bewildering. like what do you mean you don’t know if vaccines are safe? why exactly do you think child mortality rates have plummeted since the beginning of the 20th century? why is it that you are not worried about getting polio or smallpox anymore?

Anecdotally, what I’ve noticed about the NDP->CPC switch has a lot to do with vague anti-system politics without being grounded in any theory, so it’s easy to switch to the other side because there’s nothing anchoring you to any ideas or beliefs
Kinda disappointing seeing the NDP lose so many seats to both the LPC and CPC. Some of that's vote-splitting, some of that's strategic voting, but as a longtime NDP voter I think a decent amount is disappointment in how the NDP has behaved for the last year.
