The insidious way things get worse is deliberate, rewarded optimization. These steps made Hotweels measurably cheaper (or improved margins), with no measurable loss of quality. Because the quality was hard to quantify, or noisy, or deemed low value by a secondary metric (no sales impact).

Every company says it wants holistic, coherent experiences, but almost all of them align designers with specific products. I’ve spent so much of my career fixing this problem.
I don’t think designers should be assigned to product teams. Sure they can and will work on product problems but they should be assigned to strategic initiatives and programs. This assures that there is holistic systems thinking and coherence across the entire experience.

I’ve heard the song “Norwegian Wood” easily over 100 times in the last 50 years and never once did I think the narrator was setting fire to her house at the end

How are you all cross-posting to Bluesky and Mastodon? I see some iOS apps, but I’d rather use something web or MacOS-based. Any tips?

A huge problem with organizations is that there is often an obsession with the information architecture (the org chart) and no one deals with the interaction design (how people communicate and collaborate in order to achieve coherent goals).

Tapestry has completely changed (and improved!) how I access my social follows, Reddit, YouTube, and RSS feeds. With today's update, you can show a different timeline in each window on your iPad. An 11" iPad can show 3 windows and iPad Mini can show 2. (cc @iconfactory.bsky.social)

Picked up The Antidote by Oliver Burkeman from the library and this quote appears right after the dedication: 😅

I was going to buy a copy of The Power of Positive Thinking, and then I thought, 'What the hell good would that do?

I'm at the "getting rejection emails for jobs I didn't even apply to" stage of my job hunt. Anyone hiring a design director?

I'd planned to try out my new iPad Mini setup in a coffee shop today, but the rain in San Francisco is just too much. Instead, I'll stay home and watch Interstellar.

This is the share menu for a PDF on iPadsOS. Is there any way to force the Files app to show up in this list of apps that I can share to? Why is Apple trying to prevent me from saving PDFs from my iPad?

The "personal computer revolution" (1977-1999, roughly) lead us away from these critiques, and it's interesting to see how these 70-year-old ideas are more relevant now than ever.
*Those notions are 70 years old and yet they're also very "Big Tech," very surveillance-capitalist, and very AI-anxiety
