I’ve always liked @ricksteves.bsky.social and enjoyed his show, but it’s nice to learn that he is also one of the best people on the whole damn planet.
It’s the “season of love and giving”…but this year, doesn’t it seem more like a “season of fear and taking”? Like many of you, I’ve been saddened by the human impact of draconian government budget cuts and how angry many housed Americans are at unhoused Americans.

Trump's Presidencies have so far involved numerous Saturday Night Massacres, dozens of Watergates, and a never ending parade of Tea Pot Dome scandals. I worry that we're about to enter the "dozens of Kent State's" portion of the story.
National Guard troops in DC will be armed from this evening, ABC reports.

And the Pentagon confirmed plans are being drawn up for the deployment of the National Guard in Chicago.

I absolutely believe that this is correct. Watch out for serious military (and militia) crackdowns in the weeks and months to come.
I see the already historically unpopular president is exploring how to get the military invovled in “assisting” local law enforcement just a few weeks before the real shortages caused by his inept economic policy start hitting. Probably nothing to worry about.

This! We’ve normalized more than just trump’s nastiness and authoritarian nature. We’ve normalized the sheer ignorance and anti-intellectualism.
Put aside the nastiness of this post, & the way in he attacks Zelenskyy as a dictator but says not a word about his pal Putin, & just focus on the way it is written: would you hire this weird person to work for you? Would you trust this odd person to teach your kid in school?

This seems like good strategy. So many people don't even realize that their friends and neighbors are contracting, directly or indirectly, with the federal government.
Imagine if @aoc @sanders.senate.gov , every dem, SIMULTANEOUSLY held Town Halls where they allowed grant and contract recipients to explain to the country what it is they do and why it's important

Invite all media. Including RW podcasters. @spaces Flood the zone

US farmers sold $2 billion of food to USAID. Not any more.

- US farmers provided 41% of food delivered by USAID
- $340M of purchases/shipments are now paused. Over 680,000 tonnes.
- Food stranded in Houston
- Aid stopped in transit.

The world’s poor starving, food rotting & US farmers screwed.
Gutting USAID threatens billions of dollars for U.S. farms, businesses
U.S. businesses that sold goods and services to USAID are in limbo, including American farms dealing in rice, wheat and soybeans.

I’m so, so disappointed in us. We are holding up and glorifying the worst among us as our exemplars. We are teaching our young boys that bullying, grift, violence, rape, and lies are all acceptable and will not hold them back from advancing to the highest levels of our society. 1/6

The 24hr news cycle needs a lot of opinions to fill time, increasingly blurring the lines. Combine that with ever worsening media literacy/discernment by the public, and here we are. News needs analysis & opinions for context, but the lines need to be clearer. @mollyjongfast.bsky.social
I understand hating opinion columns, I say this as an opinion columnist, but reporting is good and if American democracy is going to survive we desperately need reporting to expose corruption.

In final inaugural (1945)--near end of World War II--FDR quoted this:
"Sometimes we will be rising toward the heights. Then all will seem to reverse itself and start downward...Remember...that a line drawn through the middle of the peaks and the valleys of the centuries always has an upward trend."
