This says it all. What more do you need to know about who Trump and the Republicans actually care about?

For folks who don’t know, ethnic studies programs like African American/Africana Studies, Asian American Studies, Chicano Studies and the like come directly from civil right era campus activism. Attempts to disempower such programs should be framed as attacks on civil rights same as much else rn.

Today I lost an NIH grant training clinicians to do research about intimate partner violence with perinatal women.

More women are murdered in the perinatal period than die of obstetric complications.

I didn't just lose a grant. We lost an entire cohort of people building careers to prevent that.

Man I love living in a country where I have a spot that I'm pretty scared might be cancerous but since I work 2 part time jobs and have no insurance I can't do a goddamn thing about it :) hope I'm wrong I guess!

USDA has eliminated two food safety advisory committees for microbiological contamination and meat inspection. Most recently, they had been reviewing regulatory approaches in response to the fatal Listeria outbreak from Boar’s Head meats and fatal Cronobacter contamination in powdered infant formula
USDA eliminates two food safety advisory committees
The U.S. Department of Agriculture has eliminated two committees that advise it on food safety, the agency said on Friday, raising concerns about government oversight of the food supply as the Trump administration seeks to downsize the federal bureaucracy and slash costs.

James Baldwin wrote “if they take you in the morning, they will be coming for us that night.” The instinct to throw some group under the bus as protection is not only morally wrong but always politically stupid. This is what the center-facilitated assault on trans rights has wrought.
Republican support for same-sex marriage down 31pts, from 55% to 24%, in four years according to new poll from YouGov.

Yikes.

Aside from the obvious direct harm, what's so irritating is that a handful of spoiled ignorant assholes are breaking things that we all built together. They weren't content to own almost everything, they had to wreck what little they didn't own. It's vandalism on a mass scale and has to be punished

Super contagious, and also wipes out your prior immunities (viruses and vaxes) so it leaves you vulnerable even to things you’ve had before! You have to have all your shots again post-measles!
A thing I wish more people knew is that measles is basically the most contagious disease in the world

NOAA also monitors sun spot activity. Those lucrative bailouts to Starlink aren't going to make a lick of difference if they can't track solar flares.

The microbiome paradigm, endosymbiosis, PCR, all of that came from exploratory deep-sea research.

The NOAA teach-at-sea program is one of the best training opportunities for US primary school teachers in the country. Spend time on a research cruise, get first hand science experience, and bring it all back to the classroom.

Amazing.

In the town of Oxford, MD, NOAA is the largest employer. Without the Cooperative Oxford Lab, the town ceases to exist.

NOAA installed a tide gauge for the town so they can better respond to nuisance flooding.

I worry that the focus on NOAA's weather predicting value is ignoring the millions of other ways NOAA researchers enrich communities and local economies.

There are no oysters without NOAA. There are no blue crabs without NOAA. NOAA trains teachers. NOAA is the lifeblood of coastal communities.

To summarize:

-They stopped almost all USAID work

-Then they conceded that some programs actually saved lives & granted waivers for those

-Then they promised a “careful” 90 day review of everything

-Then they cancelled 90% anyway within just weeks, including many they had just deemed life-saving

I love being so poor that I struggle to pay bills every month and frequently have to borrow money and literally eat less food than I need and I somehow owe the fucking government over $600 for my taxes. I am panicking. And it was such a good day, too.

Democrats are out with messaging that the Republicans didn’t play fair, which, first of all, grow the fuck up, and, second of all, Republicans just voted to kill Americans by stripping them of healthcare and food. Maybe talk about that. People will die because of the Medicaid and SNAP cuts.
