Wage war on nature to build new homes: that’s Labour’s offer, but it’s a con trick | George Monbiot
Wage war on nature to build new homes: that’s Labour’s offer, but it’s a con trick | George Monbiot
The government’s new planning bill is tearing down environmental protections to benefit developers. This nation of nature lovers won’t stand for it, says Guardian columnist George Monbiot

Over 400 acorns sown so far, collected from veteran oaks nearby, with lots more to go!

English oak (Quercus robur) supports >2,500 species, making it one of Britain’s most important trees for biodiversity — yet it’s far less common than it should be in Liverpool 🌱❤️

Dartmoor is dying. “Where once there was purple heather, bilberry and buzzing insect life, there are now over-grazed, sheep-infested ecological disaster zones.”

Brilliant piece by @chrisgpackham.bsky.social on how upland commons should be prioritised for nature:

Sheep are destroying precious British habitats – and we taxpayers are footing the bill | Chris Packham
Large parts of Dartmoor have been denuded of wildlife, harmed by farming and a mess of government schemes that are costly in every way, says naturalist and broadcaster Chris Packham

And it wasn’t just the Crick… we had huge institutional expertise in the UK as the pandemic washed up on our shores, and it was all buried. Buried beneath no plan, and then a plan that would involve companies with no track record pocketing our past taxes and future taxes.
My biotech company had a good team of scientists working on respiratory infections. We were keen to support testing efforts, but our instruments were "requisitioned" as "PHE were retaining control". It was heartbreaking to see the mess that ensued in some of the "factories" set up to do the testing.

I'd like an apology from @marycreagh.bsky.social please. She claimed my column on the Planning and Infrastructure Bill was "deeply misleading". She failed to explain why. But it was an accurate explanation of the problems with the Bill.
Ministers should not make unsubstantiated and untrue claims.

‘The countryside can be naturally hazardous’…

‘The river is polluted by sewage’

Great signage from NRW. I’m absolutely outraged at the state of this National Nature Reserve #AtlanticRainforest near Llan Ffestiniog, whose river was subject to 178 sewage dumps in 2024. You can literally smell it.

1. Because this issue is critical, but has received remarkably little coverage, here's a thread pulling out the key themes from my article yesterday, on the Planning and Infrastructure Bill, which puts decades of environmental protections to the torch. 🧵 www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

The horrifying planning bill, which rips up environmental protections, was drafted with CEOs in mind. We know because Keir Starmer told us, says Guardian columnist George Monbiot

The Govt’s #PlanningBill would allow developers to pay cash to trash wildlife & the environment. The nature levy isn’t a tool for ecological recovery - it’s a license to kill nature. Pleased to join ecologists & experts to sign letter to MPs👇

Sugar is pumped into young leaves to fuel growth, and the sugar is sometimes converted into the red pigment anthocyanin and stored in the leaves.

Anthocyanins absorb blue, blue-green, and green light. Therefore the light reflected by young leaves gives a golden hue

I like Private Eye as much as the next struggling satirist, but I can't believe a publication famed for it's public school origins, would pull a cartoon directed at a pursuit enjoyed almost exclusively by people with public school origins.
So @wildjustice.bsky.social is too edgy for @privateeyenews.bsky.social ! We're fans because the magazine speaks truth to power . That's what WJ tries to do too . We were surprised when PE said that it wouldn't run our second and third adverts , especially as they gave no reason for this .
