Why am I here? For #naturewriting and the Pyrenees, principally. I’m fascinated by the challenges of #rewilding. I write about that, about mountain people, and about walking. Books in English, French and Catalan.

A reminder - before Trump, MAGA, Musk and Fox rewrote history - that this is what the entire country agreed had happened five years ago today:

As @rebeccasolnit.bsky.social explains so eloquently, the world is owned by the fossil-fuel rich. Many wars have been fought to maintain or extend that power. This makes renewable energy an indispensable prerequisite for a more peaceful future. Bring it on!
Wrote a thing:
The carnage associated with fossil fuel is why speeding the transition to renewables is good for international stability as well as everything else. Fossil fuel is inseparable from violence, and dependence on it it has created a brutal world order....

Very good news for #rewilding🪶
The bearded #vulture is nesting again in the Pyrenees and elsewhere. Thanks to #reintroduction (18 this year) and the work carried out with mountain communities, this “bone-breaker” is clearly making a comeback. 📷 © G&T Nicaise

I’m intrigued by this French supermarket advert. It is quite extraordinary coming from a country that is ambivalent about wolves, sceptical about vegans and has pretty much forgotten how to cook from basic ingredients. Can anyone explain it to me?

Today, December 12 is International Iberian Lynx Day. A good day to celebrate the recovery of the species. In 'Critical danger of Extinction' 25 years ago, there are now over 2400 Iberian #Lynx. #rewilding
La población de lince ibérico 🐈 aumentó un 19% en 2024, reflejo de dos décadas de recuperación gracias a la cría en cautividad, la restauración de hábitats y la reducción de amenazas como el furtivismo y los atropellos 💚

You are ABSOLUTELY NOT going to regret listening to this bird:
A male rock ptarmigan (Lagopus muta) in winter plumage.

Ptarmigan is from Gaelic 'tarmachan' meaning "croaker". The p- was added when people mistakenly assumed it was a Greek word.

A bird forever warning people: "A werewolf!" (just in case of werewolves).

Intriguing idea that trees can help. Instead of merely sucking water out of vineyards, trees can be beneficial when faced with climate change.
France plans to spend $150 million to rip out grape vines due to wine industry woes from increasing heat, drought, etc

Yet planting rows of trees around vines can drought- & heat-proof them while keeping production up w/o irrigation

I reported about this #agroforestry solution in southern France:
