Flavoparmelia caperata is a common #lichen found across most of Britain. It has been given the name Greenshield Lichen by some, and is usually found on deciduous tree trunks.
Amazingly @sylviad.bsky.social has found another lichen nestling inside!

The apothecia of Flavoparmelia caperata releasing its spores, but if you look closely there are tiny lichens of another species that have 'germinated' in the apothecia and begun to grow. First time I've ever seen this #lichen

How did I miss this news story on pollution in the Medway last week?🤔 I must've been half-asleep.

"The largest contaminant was caffeine, which can affect reproduction in aquatic wildlife. It is thought caffeine enters the waters via sewage treatment after being ingested by humans."

Three reasons to avoid cutting back dead stems and seed heads this winter:
🐞 Hollow stems provide homes for hibernating insects, such as lacewings and ladybirds
🌻 Birds feed on seed heads like teasels, sunflowers and thistles

England’s most important nature sites are being failed.❌

Protected sites can and should be driving nature’s recovery.

But today’s OEP report exposes the real problem: years of weak delivery, underfunding and political drift have left them unable to do the job the law intended.

As of the 1st of December The Government has announced an Access Green Paper, which will consult on how to ‘strengthen the public’s legal right to access’. This is welcome - but further delay isn't: Labour MPs & access NGOs are united on the need for access legislation now.

I promised listeners of my BSBI talk last night that I'd post a picture of an endemic orchid today. This is Epipactis sancta, the Lindisfarne Helleborine.

This orchid is only found on Lindisfarne, just off the Northumberland coast, and nowhere else on Earth.
