If this were happening in Beijing or Shanghai, Western reporters there would be making it big-time news.

(Yes, China vastly more repressive and controlled. But they don't PRETEND to have First Amendment, habeus corpus, immigrant-asylum, etc.)

Did not expect ever to see this in my home territory.

Folds: If we’ve been told our whole lives that we can’t spend money on the arts because they’re not important—then why was taking over the Kennedy Center and the arts the first thing they did?

It is extremely important. It’s the bedrock of self-expression.

Congress abdicated its role as a separate and independent branch of government on January 20 while also relinquishing all oversight responsibility, so it’s entirely appropriate for Johnson to show that he has surrendered his gavel to the executive.

This answer that Mamdani provided in a 2020 interview shows that he has always been extremely open about the complexities of his diasporic identity and remains the perfect rebuttal to the attempted scandal the NYT is trying to create today.

We must not leave this out of the account of what they have done. What Musk and Trump and Vought did. What Johnson and his band of sycophants allowed them to do. What tens of millions of fellow Americans endorse.

I know that Medicare/ Medicaid is Democrats’ native language & what they’re happiest speaking but I’d love for SOME prominent person to try the line “they increased the debt limit by $5 trillion in order to triple size of ICE & make its detention center bigger than the whole federal prison system.”

But for the arbitrary nature of birth and circumstance, any of us could be living in poverty, dependent upon assistance to put food on the table, to take our children to the doctor, and to pull ourselves out of debt. The lack of empathy, the pure callousness on display in this bill, is infuriating.

@lizdye.bsky.social: Trump constantly calls immigrant gang members an existential threat to America. And yet there he was mugging in the Oval Office with Bukele, a leader whose entire regime is in bed with MS-13. www.publicnotice.co/p/abrego-gar...
Abrego Garcia is a fake gangster. Trump and Bukele are not.
Trump's filthy deal with El Salvador is an indictment of him, not the deportees.

ICE *already* can't meet their detainment numbers without rounding up children, veterans, people born in the U.S., people with no criminal records, people at immigration hearings, plus academics and visitors with valid visas.

So who do they plan to detain with >10x the budget?

The answer is: you.
If the GOP reconciliation bill passes, ICE gets through FY2029:

- $45 billion for detention, on top of the current annual budget of $3.4 billion
- $14.4 billion for transportation and removal, on top of the current annual budget of $750 million
- $8 billion for hiring/retention
- Billions more.
