If I said the last of the great twentieth century British film directors died last night, and very few people even remembered him by the time of his death... would you know what I'm talking about?

RIP Peter Watkins, whose film about the 1871 Paris Commune treats it as if it were a current news event, with participants talking to reporters. It runs to nearly six hours & was shot in less than a fortnight in an abandoned factory www.youtube.com/watch?v=fDTT...

RIP Peter Watkins. His whole filmography was an incisive stab to the gut. If you've never seen his work, I recommend starting with Punishment Park, an eternally troubling look at the swings of authoritarianism in motion. It's a masterpiece.

The silent era lasted for 4 decades but people still think "silent movie acting" was one thing.

There were multiple styles in use through different era. This scene from NICHOLAS NICKLEBY (1912) shows three at once: a hammy troupe, the phony kudos from their friends, Nicholas's genuine enjoyment

Watching Edge of Darkness for the first time and mid-80’s Ian McNeice really was the greatest could-have-been Doctor Who.

Daryl Cooper—the current #1 History Substacker—in 2016: “Think of how most people you know got here. It wasn’t from basic American ideology to reading Mein Kampf and then, boom, they’re onboard. It’s a process, and you have to initiate people without scaring them off."
How a Nazi-obsessed amateur historian went from obscurity to the top of Substack
Tucker Carlson has called Darryl Cooper the “most important popular historian working in the United States today.” His background is more extreme than previously reported.

Anyway: Jack do you have recommendations for those new to Machen? And George, same question but for those new to Ramsay Campbell?

Also, people should stop wasting time and energy on Jeffrey Epstein — “somebody that nobody cares about.”
