“That means courts will treat these children like adults” is a sentence the premier actually used. Proposing life sentences for 14-16 year olds is evil. Meanwhile the federal government is banning kids the same age from social media. Too young to post online but not to serve life in prison.
These reforms violate human rights obligations, contradict the evidence and will be devastating for children and young people in conflict with the law.

People were very hostile towards Halloween in Australia when I was growing up, but walking home near midnight and seeing the streets filled with young people having fun is so heartening, especially in a city like Sydney that can be so hostile to most expressions of public life

Been thinking about my linguistics degree and while I always loved the discipline, on reflection I think the stuff I found politically engaging (discourse analysis) didn't align with what I enjoyed intellectually (cognitive linguistics, e.g. first language acquisition, cognitive semantics).

When I was a linguistics undergrad and honours student Barb was an academic mentor to me, as I know she was to many, the first person to get me excited about scholarly research. What a cool thing from Lauren and everyone involved. Can't wait to read these papers.

I've seen some egregious misrepresentation in my time, but how many mules would have to kick you in the head to draw the imputation cited from Saleh's post?

just because Jimmy Kimmel is back doesn't mean you should go back to giving money to the mouse. it's so important — and don't forget, easy — to learn how to steal from huge media conglomerates.

1/At Macquarie Uni we are losing 50% of our units in my faculty. This is on top of cuts in 2020. We estimate by next year my faculty will be teaching 80% fewer subjects than pre Covid. Disciplines being cut do not have declining enrolments. @jennaprice.bsky.social@michaelwestbiz.bsky.social
