Never forget, car dependency isn’t freedom.

Some might ask “what’s more free than cars?”

Choices.

Choices are more free than car dependency.

It’s not a hard concept.

I’m not pitting cars against any other single mode of transport.

I’m rejecting design that creates dependency on just one mode.

The number of heat pumps going into new residential buildings in Germany has risen dramatically, but - just like EVs with fleet turnover - this has to propagate to the entire housing stock. At least we can see that gas has now peaked in the German housing stock.

New polling on data centres finds 72% of Europeans want a measure requiring new data centres be built only if they’re powered by new and additional renewable energy.

⚠️ People aren’t willing to trade the climate for unsustainable data centre growth.

Shockproof: how electrification can strengthen EU energy security | Ember
Electrification, using homegrown clean power, is the main tool to reduce the EU’s exceptionally high and risky dependence on imported fossil fuels.

Although there’s still a long way to go, new @iea.org analysis finds that since 2010:
👍 the UK and Germany have reduced their fossil fuel imports by around 1/3 by investing in renewables
👍 Denmark has cut its reliance by nearly 1/2.

The more I look at industrial decarbonisation, the more I come to the point of view that we have overstated the role of molecules in the past and underestimated the role of electrons in the future.
Thrilled to share my new commentary in Nature Reviews Clean Technology, co-authored with @soxenaar.bsky.social of @regassistproj.bsky.social

We argue for electrifying industrial heat in Europe—a game-changer for efficiency, resilience, and competitiveness.

I useful reminder that European energy from renewables won't be interrupted by geopolitics.
With the news that Iran plans to close the Straits of Hormuz, I thought I'd draw this helpful map.

HOT OFF THE PRESS: Light industry uses nearly half of EU industrial gas most of it can be electrified now.

Switching to heat pumps and electric boilers cuts emissions and boosts energy security.

“It was renewables that did it!” That was the headline after Spain’s blackout on April 28.

But the official report published today points to other factors: chain reaction of overvoltages led to cascading generation disconnections. Human error played a big role too.
