Morrison’s really need to decide to consistently categorise their aisles by either nationality of foodstuff or type. Is risotto rice ‘Italian’ or ‘rice’? (Rice) whereas pasta is ‘Italian’

Then the other grains are in an unlabeled section between ‘gravy mixes’ and ‘canned vegetables’ (of course)

For some reason my partner was a bit sceptical when I asked her to follow me down a dark corridor in Pollokshaws Burgh Hall so I could show her a gigantic and beautiful organ

Been experimenting with this new recommendation algorithm called 'asking my friends about what they like' and let me tell you this record is a record that I do like a whole lot, meditative, human and just generally a vibe intlanthem.bandcamp.com/album/the-wa...

After having listened to this about 15 times in the last week, strongly agree with @brianmck.bsky.social’s assessment here
Album of the year 2024

This album landed in my life in December and totally disrupted my album of the year plans.
Ugandan lukeme player Ekuka Morris Sirikiti’s first studio album on Nyege Nyege Tapes is crucial stuff. It’s simultaneously urgent and hypnotic, and utterly, utterly beautiful.

Super nice time at the Glasgow Improvisers’ Orchestra open session on Tuesday.

Just the purest expression of what’s most vital for me about music- being in a place together with people, weaving something together out of nothing. Magic.

The novel thing about the economics of streaming is not that artists are being paid a pittance while middlemen profit, it’s that transparent accounting and consequently fair compensation are absolutely technically possible with little effort but deliberately withheld

Or indeed that the record industry used to be not a place where hugely successful stars were often broke/living on small wages/sometimes never paid at all while the record sales money mysteriously disappeared
There seems to be some strange consensus building across my timeline at the moment that in the mid/late 20th century being some kind of outsider artist was a stable and indeed profitable career choice, which seems an odd reading

The thing about being ethical is it sort of requires you to consider your actions and their consequences. It can't really be outsourced for a small fee
people always want to know what the ethical alternative to spotify is. i'd rather they just be honest with themselves abt the reality that they're all mostly bad + grapple w the complexity of that than thinking sending $10/mo to a diff tech company changes anything. supporting art is a diff equation

My favourite feature of Google’s AI summaries is definitely how it will regularly hallucinate non-existent features of software I’m trying to use, or just now a completely fictitious WWDC talk

What I'm working towards here is an open repository of drum practice data for researchers (and those interested!) to use and hopefully try to gain some insights in terms of large-scale, accurate distributed data in terms of what is and isn't effective in terms of drum practice. #musicscience

If you make a mistake while performing, rather than just going on as if the mistake was intended, the best thing to do is to stop immediately and carry out a root cause analysis while the facts of the mistake are still fresh in your mind.

Trying to write some nice, clear, ethical informed consent permission forms for (anonymised) data collection and it's making me want to read @cennydd.com's 'Future Ethics' again.

Yep.

Don’t use streaming myself but it’s difficult to imagine a better deal (for the consumer) than ‘access to (almost) everything, in your pocket, for a small amount of money’ so the answer has to be better regulation
Something more convenient comes along.
what exactly has to happen before you people will stop using spotify?

Yes, to which I'll add - keep making that half-broken Pd patch, keep collecting field recordings of your washing machine, keep producing dance music that inflicts foot injuries, keep doing exactly what you're doing as it's a hell of a lot better than what a lot of people are doing with their time.
Keep playing your guitar. Keep painting that sunset. Keep writing that screenplay. Even at the level of hobbyist you are richer than these people could ever dream of in ways they will never, ever have. They know it, so should you.

Want to make yr iPhone less of an attention sponge? Set up the colour filters in Accessibility to make the screen black and white and set up automations using Shortcuts to de/reactivate it for apps that need colour (maps/camera etc)

Urgh
For years, the public has called them "fake artists." But internally at Spotify, the program has name: Perfect Fit Content. My investigation, and the first look into my book Mood Machine, is the January cover at @harpers.bsky.social

After several listens of the full record, I can confirm it’s absolutely one of the best records I’ve heard this year. My partner loves it as well
Just from hearing a couple of songs I’ve got a strong suspicion the Deep Cabaret record reissued by Wrong Speed will be one of my favourites of this year, absolute chills up the spine stuff deepcabaret.bandcamp.com/album/matchl...
