I lived 17 years on this earth before I realized IHOP stood for International House of Pancakes. I thought IHOP was a family name who started the restaurant, and that International House of Pancakes was just their slogan.

This is palpably true. The chilling effect on free speech and academic freedom has been swift and fierce, as intended.
This is very noticeable among students as well. Especially international students are increasingly reluctant to speak, even inside the classroom, because they are - understandably! rightfully! - frightened they might get punished by the regime.
