We’ve worked out how the molecular machines that create acidic compartments can recruit autophagy (self-eating) machinery when they can’t maintain a pH gradient. We are really pleased with this discovery, out in @MolecularCell cell.com/molecular-cell…. 1/16

I don’t know who needs to hear this but the CDC is being eviscerated right now. America is not going to have any kind of outbreak response capacity after tonight. Americans’ health data is no longer secure. Say goodbye to federal public health in any capacity. It’s a disaster. We won’t recover.

The main thing - is it not already clear - RFKr Jr is uniquely unqualified to lead the HHS.
All main agencies under his watch - NIH, FDA, CMS - are also headed by incompetent contrarian peddlers of disinformation, conspiracy theories, and pseudoscience.
This will, and already does, cost lives.

New: I spent the week looking into the cancelled mRNA contracts. Interviews with HHS officials and MAGA and MAHA influencers reveal an HHS agency plagued by dysfunction as Kennedy chips away at the nation’s public health.

I know we're supposed to reflexively dismiss the loss of any niche subject in the humanities, but this is a big part of why the university exists: so a student who wants to learn Basque can learn Basque. & the reason a school can offer that class is because THEY HAVE A ROMANCE LANGUAGES DEPARTMENT.
I learned beginner Basque at UChicago, an experience that i still cherish. This is fucking appalling to hear
Wow. The University of Chicago, a world-class institution whose humanities faculty in the past has included Homi Bhabha & Lauren Berlant & Ralph Ellison & Hannah freaking Arendt, is getting rid of basically every graduate department involving the acknowledgment that other cultures & languages exist.

Also birth rate would need to go up. Currently very difficult economically for young couples to have kids.
Tbh any even remotely ‘progressive’ UK government faces major quandaries with #Immigration. There is clearly a large wedge of the voting public hostile to its current scale & character. Yet addressing these feelings requires a longterm realignment of major areas of the UK economy
