A sperm whale surfacing with a giant squid in its mouth.

I love seeing things like this. Reminds me of the raw and beautiful savagery of nature.

ChemDraw turned 40 this week! 🎉

I worked with Revvity Signals to put together this graphic showing how the chemical drawing program has developed from basic beginnings to the integration of features to predict spectra and highlight structural features

Since there is talk about bringing back ASBESTOS (this is somehow true), I thought it would be useful to describe just some what happens to you when you breath this stuff into your lungs.

In short, it’s terrible.

A primary headteacher recently got in touch: what are schools doing about AI in reports? Allowing it? Banning it?

Here's what we found out...
🤷‍♀️ Over half of teachers said their school has no policy
✅ 33% say AI use is explicitly allowed
🚫 5% of schools have banned it

Our pupils loved @jimalkhalili.bsky.social talk on time travel yesterday at GCSE live. We love the simplicity in which you explained some tricky concept!

Have you ever seen Beyond the infinite two minutes? It is one the most original time travelling concepts I've ever seen!

I frequently share this study with my pupils.

The book Inner Drive made '99 studies that every teacher needs to know' is great.
🎧🔇 Did you know...?

A study showed that students who revised in quiet environments performed over 60% better in an exam than their peers who revised listening to music that had lyrics?

Another brilliant piece by Becky! Some excellent food for thought, even before it considers AI use for teachers.
I gave this talk on Artisan Teaching and AI over 4 months ago at #researchED in London. It doesn't feel too out-of-date, despite how fast the world of technology is moving at the moment! rebeccaallen.co.uk/2025/01/07/g...

If you're interested in energy/climate you've probably heard the nugget that "kerosene/crude oil helped save the whales", by reducing demand for whale oil in lanterns.
I've even trotted it out myself🤦‍♂️
But it turns out it's NOT true.
Here's what actually happened edconway.substack.com/p/no-kerosen...
No, Kerosene did NOT save the Sperm Whale

The problem with a lot of ocean "exploitation" is that it's like mining a human for calcium. Yes, a human body contains ~1kg of calcium, and you could take it out, but it's already *doing* quite a lot of useful things, and the human has far more potential to help you if you leave the calcium alone.
