Happy New Year! Did you know one of our libraries turns 40 in 2026? This much-loved space opened in 1986 & was named the Shakeshaft Library in 2015, in memory of Dr John Shakeshaft who oversaw its construction during his 42 years as our Librarian.

Congratulations to Prof. Sir Peter Barnes FRS (1966, Med Sci; Hon Fellow 2011) & Prof. Anthony Davenport (Fellow 1995–2023; Emeritus Fellow 2023) on being recognised as Highly Cited Researchers i.e. in the top 1% in their field by number of citations for their papers

A Fellow of St Catharine’s has received one of the most prestigious accolades conferred by the Royal College of Surgeons of England. Professor Michael Nicholson (2018) has been awarded the 2025 Hunterian Lectureship, which honours individuals who have made outstanding contributions to surgical research and practice.

With support from Catz and others, Paula Teeuwen (a Chemistry PhD student) has skated on ice and dry land throughout her time at @cam.ac.uk. She is now leading the revival and merger of student societies for ice skating & roller skating. Read our new interview:
Postgraduate revives student skating scene
A St Catharine’s student with a passion for skating has been pivotal in the development of a new Cambridge University Ice and Roller Skating Club (CUIRSC). Paula Teeuwen (a Chemistry PhD student and former Secretary of the College’s MCR) has skated throughout her time at St Catharine’s and is now leading the revival and merger of previously inactive societies for ice skating and roller skating under the CUIRSC banner.
