In #JapaneseFolklore uwabami is an enormous snake #yokai with shapeshifting powers believed to eat and drink absolutely vast amounts. It has a particular fondness for drinking sake and one of its favourite foods is people. Legend says it can even swallow...

In Chinese #mythology, the phoenix(鳳凰, Fenghuang) is the legendary king of all birds. The male is called "Feng," and the female is "Huang," symbolizing auspiciousness and harmony.

God of the Hundred Birds
Shaohao(少昊), one of the Three Sovereigns and Five Emperors, son of the Yellow Emperor, led one of China's earliest tribes. Born under a shower of five mystical phoenixes, he became known as the "Phoenix Clan."

🎨 《白帝少昊》雪魚 Shaohao also established a unique system of government: using various kinds of birds as civil and military officials. The specific division of labor was based on the characteristics of the different bird species. The phoenix was in charge of all the birds, followed by the swallow, who was in charge of spring; the bee-eater, who was in charge of summer; the parrot, who was in charge of autumn; and the peacock, who was in charge of winter. In addition, Shaohao appointed five other birds to manage daily affairs. The filial pigeon was in charge of education; the fierce hawk was in charge of the military; the fair cuckoo was in charge of construction; the majestic eagle was in charge of the law; and the eloquent turtledove was in charge of speech. Nine other birds were in charge of agriculture, and five pheasants were in charge of five different trades: carpentry, lacquer work, pottery, dyeing, and leatherwork.

The Dragon Maiden(龍女) is a figure in mythology and folklore, often depicted as a daughter of the Dragon King.
She is said to herd mystical sheep, which are not ordinary sheep but water spirits under the Dragon King's domain.

In #JapaneseFolklore, the akateko is a #yokai that takes the form of a red, disembodied child's hand. The akateko drops from the branches of Japanese honey locust trees to 'surprise' those below. Thankfully it is otherwise harmless.

🍁AUTUMN AT KYŌTO'S GREAT WALL🧱

During fall Kitano Tenmangū allows guests to enjoy the maples that grow along the Odoi (御土居). Now mostly leveled, this great berm was created by Toyotomi Hideyoshi (豊臣秀吉 1537-98) to encircle and define the boundaries of the city.

The bright red Bush Warbler Bridge crosses the Tenjin-gawa (river) beneath Kitano Tenmangu. Steps lead up a remnant of the Odoi, a great earthen berm that once encircled Kyoto. Orange maple leaves add a splash of colour to a bamboo grove. The Tenjin River flows beside Kitano Tenmangu (the enshrined god of which gives the river its name). It once acted as a 'moat' for the Odoi berm.
