there are plenty of legitimate critiques of the Michelin Guide but disparaging them as “a tire company” is irrelevant when they’ve been doing this since 1900 - it would be like disregarding Sietsema’s meals at the Inn over the past decade because “Bezos footed the bill”

I strongly feel that the health of our society rests on an immediate ban on AI models complimenting or encouraging their users (or really adopting a persona generally)
This thread freaked me out in part because I recognized it as a real social phenomenon in my own life. A member of our extended circle is writing a book because ChatGPT told him it was a brilliant and novel idea. Friends, it is neither but he is absolutely convinced and nobody knows what to do.
I am by no means a prominent public intellectual, but my inbox is increasingly filled with messages from people who have been convinced by sycophantic chatbots that they have discovered revolutionary theories that entirely upend our scientific understanding of the universe.

It’s Cool to Have No Followers Now
As social media has become older, more manipulable, and more automated by artificial intelligence, flouting online popularity has gained a new cachet.

we’re in the middle of a strange cultural inversion where financially ruinous espresso rigs have moved from cafes to homes and financially ruinous audiophile setups have moved from homes to cafes
the fun thing about home espresso brewing is it will absolutely not save you money, especially if you are the kind of person who tends to become obsessive about technical details

Heilig-Kreuz-Kirche in Großfeldsiedlung, Hannes Lintl, 1975

A treasure in Vienna’s suburbs with a kind clergy who welcome the occasional architectural tourist. While the neon-wrapped acrylic cross is the star of the show, the pews with their continuous felt-topped heated seats are a nice touch.

Good overview of apartment conversion projects - office gets all the hype but they’re only a quarter of the market, with hotels in the lead (for now). Very low conversion rates of C-class office buildings show why they’re of so little value.

I should at least do a walk of honor from the intersection of NY Ave/NJ Ave to Howard University Hospital
I'm here to remind everyone that Thursday is the 20th anniversary of Cam'ron getting shot and then driving himself to the hospital in a lambo. So, if you have floating holidays at your job, a good time to use one. Remember, it's a day on the road, not a day off!

Under the influence of the American Civic Association, the early National Park service developed a niche micro-style of rustic architecture. Yosemite’s Ahwahnee hotel is one of the defining examples, a fun hybrid of arts and crafts details, beaux-arts composition and art deco detailing.

GC solicitation slipped another 10 months from the last schedule update

The real issue will become obvious when they get bids - costs have increased substantially since the announcement of the old $92 million estimate getting ‘fully funded’
