The best two things I ever did for my productivity/sanity was (1) I schedule time to answer email and I ONLY have the app open during these windows (1-1:30 and 4-4:30) and (2) I turn off all notifications on my phone except calls + texts from my family. I highly recommend this.

Interesting research! Human beings are, by nature, extremely bad at noticing & appreciating the significance of gradual change over time. We notice binaries, on/offs, either/ors.

"Winter temperatures gradually rising." - no one cares

"Lake X used to freeze over; now it doesn't." - people notice
🚨 New in Nature Human Behavior! 🚨

Binary climate data visuals amplify perceived impact of climate change.

Both graphs in this image reflect equivalent climate change trends over time, yet people consistently perceive climate change as having a greater impact in the right plot than the left.

Some context for what that kind of drop looks like. That's the lowest US score since the Civil War + a 1-year drop of that size puts us in the same company as events like Belarus's 1995 coup (though not as bad as Gambia in 1994 or Thailand in 2006)

The goal of the {findSVI} #RStats 📦 is "to calculate regional CDC/ATSDR Social Vulnerability Index (SVI) at a geographic level of interest using US census data". Functions include find_svi() and get_census_data(). By Heli Xu & others

Calculate Social Vulnerability Index for Communities
Developed by CDC/ATSDR (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention/ Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry), Social Vulnerability Index (SVI) serves as a tool to assess the resilience of communities by taking into account socioeconomic and demographic factors. Provided with year(s), region(s) and a geographic level of interest, findSVI retrieves required variables from US census data and calculates SVI for communities in the specified area based on CDC/ATSDR SVI documentation.
