Public schools and state agencies stop exploiting labor challenge

The loan repayment plan sucks. I live in the most expensive state. I am severely rent burdened and the cost of living is already too much. The repayment plan doesn't factor this in and makes me pay. All because my dumbass wanted to be a teacher! www.theguardian.com/us-news/2023...

States and counties need to step up to protect wetlands. Maui County created a wetlands overlay district to create it's own, more protective standards for identifying, mapping, rezoning and protecting wetlands. It's a long process with mapping still ongoing, so the time to act is now

The Pyrocene is underway. We underestimated how fuel availability increases in an intensified hydrological cycle; it dries/dies out faster than anticipated.

Wildfires in Canada and Hawaii. Hurricane Hilary set to strike California. Scientists have warned about worse storms and more frequent fires for years.

My issue with this type of thinking is that it ignores the larger system which enables the tourism industry to exploit land and water resources without paying for its impacts. This is what led to the negligence which led to the devastating fire

Palette cleanser. The 150-year old historic banyan tree gets treated. While it was scorched in the fire, arborists say there is living tissue under every trunk. It is low on sap and in a coma-like state, but there's hope! Aeration, watering, and compost tea treatments 😊🌱

I am cynical because after COVID I saw a lot of promises but the truth is after the crisis we saw: Median homes >$1M, skyrocketing rents, increases in poverty, billionaire land grabs, net population out migration, more displacement of locals and native Hawaiians, a return in unsustainable tourism...

Simply pointing out that damage from the Lāhainā fire was estimated at $5.5B by FEMA. And Bezos, who pandemic-purchased a $78M waterfront property in South Maui, makes that amount in a month.

More history of Lāhainā as a lush place, which was run dry by extractive capitalism leading to the conditions in which the fire spread. We can regenerate the land by giving it back to native farmers and management, with proper funding and support from the local government

County should fill the gaps and fund rental assistance and food/utility vouchers for the impacted and those caring for the impacted. Raise taxes on luxury non owner occupied homes, hotels and short term rentals
Natural disasters really highlight our huge housing issues - including the fact that renters often get little to no support or consideration when they lose their homes to fire, as opposed to homeowners.

The Lāhainā injection wells US Supreme Court suit centered on the ecological damage of the County disposing wastewater into groundwater

Imaging if rather than litigating this issue to justify ecological harm, the County invested in wastewater reuse to reforest and grow native greenbelts/firebreaks

Before the fire, >half of Maui renters were rent burdened. Maui has the highest percentage of severely rent burdened in the entire state. Our housing affordability index is 38, meaning the median household income is only 38% of what's needed to qualify for the median home.
It's crisis on crisis...
I really worry for all the renters in Hawaii; after the fires started around here a few years ago, we lost rental units so the prices soared and it contributed hugely to increased homelessness

With Larry Ellison owning 98% of the island of Lāna'i, a history of plantation ownership, and trend of billionaire land grabs, there is a real fear that Lahaina will be scooped up
