We cannot be a meaningfully representative democracy until we replace the Senate & single-member districts as currently structured with actually representative & democratic institutions

I already called my rep. It won’t do anything in my case but it needs to be done anyways.

The people speak through the Congress and Congress must reassert itself, regardless of which party holds the Presidency. Congress has abdicated its power and handed it to SCOTUS and POTUS, to our detriment.
I know this can sound kind of silly at a time like this, but doing a war without congressional authorization is ample grounds for impeachment

Wait until Social Security is privatized and a company like MOHELA is running it. Wait times will be at least 4 hours and you’ll get hung up on 3 hours into the call and have to rejoin the queue and wait another 4 hours.

Ask me (and many, many other student loan borrowers) how I know.
@maddow.msnbc.com I’m 80. I decided to call Social Security

House Rs just passed the budget resolution, the first step in their process to enact a bill that'd kick millions off Medicaid & cut SNAP down to just $1.60 per person per meal on avg while cutting taxes for the top 0.1% by $278k - all while increasing the debt

Measles has a 12% mortality rate in unvaccinated young children.

Children cannot be vaccinated until they are at least 12 months old.

And if infants need to be kept home and out of daycare to avoid potentially fatal measles outbreaks...

Guess who that removes from the workforce.

(Women.)
In 3 days, the number of measles cases in a highly unvaccinated area of Texas has doubled. There are now 48 cases, all of whom are unvaccinated, and 13 of whom have been hospitalized so far, for a hospitalization rate of 27%. This is huge figure in epidemiology. This outbreak will keep spreading.

I really wish reporting would stop faithfully citing this “pause and review” line at agencies experiencing impoundment. Every previous administration reviewed programs. The difference is they still executed the law.

Pausing spending for “review” is not a thing.

Very niche post: I’m forever grateful for the members of the clergy who are (and have been for years) speaking out for justice and leading their communities in engagement and action.

If that’s you, you inspire me and so many others. Thank you!

I am simultaneously more existentially scared for us all collectively *and* more hopeful about the fall of MAGA fascism right now.

MAGA spent so much time on culture war during the Biden years, it seemed very likely that making good on those threats would be their opening salvo.

I think the biggest risk factor in doomerism is not having kids. My job as a parent is to make sure my little ones get to inherit a world better than the one I came into.

The rise of fascism is terrifying. Just as terrifying is that, outside of AOC and maybe a few others, Democrats are not meeting the moment.
Wonder why so many of us are despondent about the response from Democratic leadership 🙄

When I look at the fear this man thrives on. What he wants to project and sow onto so many. The fear and anger that his supporters want to sow into everyone, I immediately relax. They want fear. More fear. Fear keeps people under control. And I won’t be under their control

!!! Big deal for rural healthcare and any hospital employee working towards PSLF
In addition to taking away health insurance from tens of millions, Republicans also want to cut payments to hospitals who treat people without insurance. Translation: hospitals in rural and high-need urban communities will be at risk of closure and ER wait times will skyrocket.

Yes! This isn’t a hard line as much as a framework to guide my work. Our students already live in the ‘real world,’ they’re citizens of, participants in, and victims of it.

Also, when folks talk about the real world they’re too often referring to adherence to an oppressive capitalist machine.
Both/and rather than either/or, IMHO. An authentic education helps students to understand the “real world” and why it’s organized that way so that they can “dream of a better world” and figure out ways to realize their dreams for themselves and others.
I don’t want my class to prepare students for ‘the real world.’

I want my class to help students dream of a better world.

Turns out (again and again) that the best way to prevent poverty is giving people money. But America absolutely hates that idea.
In Georgia, a mom facing eviction reached out to DFCS for help. They offered her nothing. Soon the agency took her kids away because of "inadequate housing."

The state then paid *$6,200 a month* to house her kids in foster care.

One of the most important and infuriating stories I read this year:
When Families Need Housing, Georgia Will Pay for Foster Care Rather Than Provide Assistance
In more than 700 cases over five years, Georgia reported inadequate housing as the sole reason for taking a child into foster care, a WABE and ProPublica analysis found. Advocates say it would be chea...

Yes, this exactly!
🧵
So many smart people seem to believe that higher ed. should be job training, explicitly. The rise in business (undergraduate) majors is one byproduct of such a perspective. And watching universities cut humanities is another.

I find this approach incredibly shortsighted, and ultimately defeating. 🧵

Exactly the same. My love for our library has grown more than I could imagine having a young kid to explore it with! Truly one of the best things we collectively have chosen to invest in!
I have always loved public libraries, but having young children has exponentially increased my gratitude and sense of indebtedness to them. Our local library is such a huge part of our lives. The books, the programming, the very intentionally curated kids’ section. It’s all such a gift.
