New release that I worked on is out in the world! Thanks Runaway Horse and @janapochop.bsky.social for bringing me in to mix the ultra vibey Mi Voz. Go have a listen!
Many congratulations to Runaway Horse on the release of "mujer." It's a stunning work, and I was so honored to produce "Mi Voz" for this project. Thanks to @audiosauruss.bsky.social for mixing, and Andre Moran and Cedar Creek Studio for tracking the vocals and piano for our track! 🧡

Some death metal recording from a couple weeks ago. Drummer requested no samples be used so we had to like, actually record good sounds. Love that. It’s not my usual genre but it turned out great.

Decided to start reading The Call of Cthulhu on Hoopla because eldritch horror seems like a pleasant escape from reality.

Someone drew another swastika on a lamp in my neighborhood so we turned it into a game of tic tac toe. Forgot to get a before picture but you don’t want to see that filth anyway. (This was before April Fool’s Day so it wasn’t a joke.) Welcome back to Trump’s America.

There’s no substitute for practice.
There’s some marketing messages doing the rounds in the world of music
production. They are being used to encourage a new generation of music
makers to buy all sorts of stuff they don’t need and to subscribe to plans
they can’t afford. We expose them and tell you why it’s a scam.

Task for Gen Z: If “Ohio” means something is average or boring, I need you to start using “Texas” to mean stupid or asinine, especially intentionally. I’d do it myself but as a millennial my sway on pop culture is zero.

I’m finally getting to one of the most meaningful projects I’ve done. I cannot believe ten years have gone by, but Kent Finlay left us on March 2, 2015. In February just before that, he asked me, Big John Mills, and Gregg Andrews to come out to his house and record his stack of unrecorded songs.

This has been sitting on my shelf for years and I guess it’s time I read it. And holy hell, right from the start, the rise of the Nazi party and Bolsheviks is *exactly* what the Trump/Musk party is doing now.

Watched The Producers tonight and it feels nostalgic to remember a time when Nazis were universally maligned.

The only thing that will get me through the next four years is good music. Took my dad to see David Gray last night, one of our faves. His new record is lovely and poetic. A real songwriter’s songwriter.

Crammed a 13 piece band in the studio for rehearsals for a big event. Last one, then rest! And by rest I mean a different gig of course.

Happy heavenly birthday to my old friend and mentor Kent Finlay. I still see you at work every day. I can still hear you say, “Well, Russell, that sounds real good.” The CD on the wall and signature red bandana help keep my head on straight.

I equally hate our situation.

Please read Gail’s entire thread.

I care deeply about what’s going on and I hope that when people scroll by me, they can at least forget about the doom for a good minute or two.
Folks.

I am still telling jokes on the internet like a doofus. I want to explain why I am telling jokes like a doofus when people, especially marginalized people but also everyone else, are being slowly pulled apart by the most ghastly people imaginable.

The answer is, for my mental health.
