Homesick for a home that I have yet to create
My worst year in decades and I survived communism for 27 years.
2024 was bad 0/10 would not recommend

Financial priorities first
Even when I was pretty low income, I’ve always considered books as exempt from budget considerations.

Not amazing. Just correcting USA stupidity.

I’ve never seen myself working FOR a company but WITH one. Each works for their own benefit—I work for a monthly previously agreed income, the company for its own goals. We collaborate, but it’s not about one serving the other. It’s a mutual exchange, not a hierarchy of dependence.

Not to brag, but two years ago today, I earned my degree as a historian from the University of Havana.

This may still be one of the most eye opening thing I have students watch/read in this class:

This Haunting Animation Maps the Journeys of 15,790 Slave Ships in Two Minutes
By the conclusion of the trans-Atlantic slave trade at the end of the 19th century, Europeans had enslaved and transported more than 12.5 million Africans.

Yes, A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara is my favorite book so far, and no, I’m not emotionally unavailable. Sure, you need to be in a healthy state of mind to read it, but even then, it will stay with you forever. Trigger warnings are not in the first pages just because.

Finishing Orbital by @authorharvey.bsky.social.
A well-deserved winner of @thebookerprizes.bsky.social.
Just as former USSR cosmonaut Sergei Krikalev’s voice reached a Cuban woman across space, yours has reached this Cuban reader across borders, all the way to post-Yugoslavia (Serbia).
Thank you.

No country has ever embraced socialism and successfully implemented it without ultimately infringing on the rights of the masses. It inevitably leads to either dictatorship or fascism. Prove me wrong.

Ah, what a delightful way to address a fellow human—criticizing someone for doing precisely what you do when your viewpoint opposes theirs. Naturally, we must also acknowledge your unparalleled grasp of the planet’s collective consciousness to confidently declare she won’t be missed. Gotcha.

I’m a historian and I don’t want people to read your comment, nothing to do with climate, everything to do with common sense.
Secrets historians don’t want people to know: Our idea of ancient history has way more to do with which parts of the world have climates that support papyrus/parchment/woodblock/etc. preservation than anyone is willing to admit.
