The two NASA astronauts who were unexpectedly stranded on the space station for the last nine months have been picked up and are on the way back.

I'm imagining a conversation during the journey back:

Astronauts: So, what's been going on these last nine months?

Rescue Crew: [...]

Too many novels with billionaire heroes. I understand the appeal of wish-fulfillment, but can’t we have less-wealthy heroes who pay their employees well and provide great benefits and are okay with not making a ton more than everyone else?

Dog photos don’t help in times like these. But they don’t hurt either. So here are two.

A Black woman named Aliyah was struggling to find work. So, she catfished herself and made a fake profile on LinkedIn named "Emily." Emily had the same qualifications as Aliyah but received 57.9% of interview invites while Aliyah received 8.9%

This is what we mean when we say racism is systemic.

You shouldn't need a terrible thing happening to us to motivate you to read trans stories, but one is happening today so 👇🏼👇🏼👇🏼
On that note:

Trans authors (I mean authors who are trans, NOT cis people who write about trans people), drop your book links here and I'll try to repost as many as I can throughout the day.

Cis people: Repost trans authors' book links.

Cis people who want to complain about being excluded: gtfo
Being a trans author is fucking weird right now. Hell is actively unfolding all around us but I still need to be like, "hey, everyone, wanna buy my silly little queer book? It won't make anything better, but it's kinda fun?"

So....hey, everyone, wanna buy my silly little queer book?

Thread on money and happiness, worth checking out. Anecdotally, for me the sweet spot for money and happiness seems to be All Your Life Expenses + 25%, because everything critical is taken care of and you have some money for life enhancement. More than that won't make you much happier overall.
So rather than thread in someone’s mentions, I’m going to mention a talk that I went to in 2004-ish from a guy who researches the psychological impact of money on happiness and I have no idea who it is so take my memory of this with a massive grain of salt.
More money does seem to mean more happiness—to a point, beyond which it becomes horrifyingly psyche-distorting

10-15" of snow -- how well does your neck of the woods handle it?

Mine is okay, in drips and drabs, but during the first 8-10" we made it up to level 2 snow emergency; just level 1 for the last 3" (two separate storm systems).

Random doesn't mean everyone in any-which-way order. It means one or more people several times and others not at all. 1 person in state X receives 0 jury summons in 42 years; another gets 3 in 7. Random.

And on a different note, my dogs continue to insist that they don't want coats even when shivering in the chill wind. Sigh.
