Hoekstra accuses Canada of meddling in U.S. politics, says restarting trade talks 'not going to be easy' | CBC News

Trump has not fully consolidated his grip on power: his regime is not totalitarian. Perhaps it never will be because Orbán-style "competitive authoritarianism" allows for the plausible deniability that Tom here is desperate to grasp. But the ideology behind the Trump regime is clearly fascist.
1. If America were fascist right now, I would not be posting here. Neither would you.

Instead, I - and you - would be trying to build networks of people *offline* who can support and protect each other, in the dark, rather than yelling at the president and his stooges in our own names. /2

Fuck me! I was not aware how terrible the extinction of humans would be to the US's GDP! I am now convinced that we should avoid this outcome. As long as it is fiscally prudent to do so, of course. 🫤

I recall the following quote from David Frum's "Trumpocracy": If conservatives become convinced they cannot win democratically they will not abandon conservatism. They will reject democracy.

They know they have one year. Expect the absolute worst from them. Be prepared, not scared.
The GOP was already freaking out about the impending Trump effect on the midterms.

Now they’re fucking terrified.

You can take the man out of the Republican party, but you cannot take Republican thinking out of the man.
Duh. Those of us on the ground last year actually speaking with middle class/working class voters and who heard from these voters every single day the same - “Trump is an asshole, but Democrats are out of touch” - could’ve saved my new political party a lot of time & money producing this “report.”👇

The CBC continues to be disappointing. Instead of framing it as broad support for Ontario's ad, they centre Trump's bruised ego.

Remember when asked about trans rights during the campaign she replied that she would "follow the law"? Some tried to spin that into a full-throated defense of trans rights. Albeit most doing that were only using it to cudgel actual trans people with.

Trump will never ban the Democratic Party because authoritarians know it is useful to have an almost comically weak foil to give the semblance of democracy.
NEW: Expect some drama in House Dems’ meeting this AM over a vote to honor Charlie Kirk.

Some members undecided. Others voting no or “present.” But some in the party fear anything but a unanimous vote for it will be a messaging coup for the GOP.

Someone briefed Trump (or, more likely, his speechwriters) that the phrase "special relationship" is like catnip to the ears of the much of the British political class. In particular, Starmer will be on cloud nine for weeks because of this. (Even if his poll numbers sink even further.)
