This oil on canvas painted at the end of the garden went through various phases. It looks interesting at this stage but went on to get stodgy and overworked. I have it in mind to attack this one again when the weather gets warmer. It's taking up space so it's that or maybe chuck it.

The Merry Maidens is a stone circle in Cornwall. It consists of 19 upright granite blocks, said to be girls dancing on Sabbath turned into stone. It is 24 metres in diameter. The Pipers, 2 tallest standing stones in Cornwall, stand nearby. #StandingStoneSunday

“Do not act falsely and terror […] will not consume you.

“Do not slander, and you will not ponder grief.

“Do not commit evil, and you will not gain eternal distress.”

Exquisite.
The Lady of Baza, a large & extraordinary carved limestone cinerary urn. The winged throne & the bird (pigeon?) in her left hand seem to indicate a connection to the afterworld or deities. Mid-4th C. BC, on display at the Nat. Arch. Museum, Madrid.

When I was young
I never needed anyone
And making love was just for fun
Those days are gone

Living alone
I think of all the friends I've known
But when I dial the telephone
Nobody's home

All by myself
Don't want to be all by myself anymore
All by myself
Don't want to live all by myself anymore🎶🎵

Fascinating world of ancient #glass: One of my favourite #Roman objects made of glass is this little basket (height 6.5cm). It is not clear what it was used for, possibly to hold cosmetics.

From Syria, dating 3rd century AD.

On display at British Museum

The Hove Amber Cup for #FindsFriday

A beautiful and rare Bronze Age amber cup which glows when it catches the light.

Carved from a single piece of Baltic amber about 3,500 years ago.

Found in 1856 inside Hove Barrow, a large Bronze Age burial mound in Sussex.

In Basque folklore, the Basajaun, a wild protector of forests, thrives in snowy winter landscapes. These beings guard animals and plants, symbolizing resilience and balance during nature’s harshest season. #WyrdWednesday

A detail from the Rudston Venus mosaic, Yorkshire. A magnificent example of Romano-British art, Venus is depicted with the golden apple and a mirror, although she appears to have dropped the latter in her excitement.

One of the rarest objects from #Pompeii: a small portrait of a man painted on glass. It’s also a rare portrayal of an older, grey-haired individual. How did this survive the eruption of Vesuvius? Thought to have come from Alexandria. 🏺 #AncientBluesky
