I hope my fellow #chapelhill and #carrboro people are doing ok with round 2 ⛈️! This is my backyard right now. Recommended that you turn up the volume to max.

having baked a mediocre loaf of bread is particularly galling because you know good bread, you have made good bread. You know what it is meant to be! And your sub-par failure loaf is seasoned with the absence of all those prior successes

Bluesky ir pavisam jautrāks kopš visi latvieši parādījās.

My Bluesky feed has completely changed since all the Latvians showed up last month. Love this data visualization of tangerine quality in Rīga supermarkets: I feel like I'm there. Welcome, guys. 🇱🇻
Pārliecinoši sliktākie bija Maximas mandarīni, tie bija krietni skābāki un saturēja vidēji 7 sēkliņas :/

ChatGPT told me that Thomas Mann wrote the preface to the first German edition of Henry James's "Turn of the Screw." Shortly thereafter, it admitted that was a total lie. But oh what sweet deluded thoughts I enjoyed before the harsh truth was confessed. 📚

What to do with a collapsing Kierkegaard and key financial documents? (Attempted bookshelf purge)

Hanging out in Nashville. Pictured marker practically in the middle of honky tonk central. I wonder if the party buses stop to commemorate the contribution to ornithological science.

Making a Jāņu siers, a cheese traditionally made for the Latvian midsummer celebration Jāņi. Cheese is what Latvians do instead of human sacrifice. Otherwise that movie Midsommar offers a pretty solid ethnographic description of it all.

Yeah perfume is an indulgent and wasteful way to spend money: check out the NYT lifestyle section for a fuckton more ways to do so.
NYT scare story about young ppl buying perfume: www.nytimes.com/2024/05/19/s...
Exciting to see fragrance fandom become a new way for the olds to hate on the youngs (after hula hoops, droopy pants, DnD, decades of video game hate).
As an old myself: have fun, youngsters, and smell however you want
When Did Teen Boys Get a Nose for $300 Cologne?
Some Gen Z kids can’t seem to get enough of the luxury fragrances.

Some reporter on the BBC just pronounced Wichita to rhyme with akita. It was pretty cute. I hope he doesn't get in trouble.

I got emotional in the Helsinki airport and bought a bottle of Shalimar in duty free.

I think the nurturing fairy godmother vibe it has may have been extra appealing in a day of transit and separation.
This was my bedtime perfume for years: a spritz before bed every night; double dose for insomnia

I'm always mentally half-wallowing in the late antique/early medieval so am totally in sympathy with the village of Pampliega's appeal.
Unexpected Visigothic king news in the Times!

(And yes there was a certain amount of wincing as I read this. Someone tell the fifteenth-century emirs of Granada that they were consigned to history in 1274, they are going to be so embarrassed).

The difference between entomology and etymology is what really bugs me.

I think I read an ethology study on that.

Latvian soup culture, cont.
Wet, snowy day in Rīga. More soup, of course. Cabbage for me, beet for the bf.

The Latvian word for wet, Slapjš, is pretty great. Onomatopoeia for peeling off wet socks.

Of course it got political. A Latvianized version of the name was created, "sāļvira," and someone or other made it 2023 word of the year. It clearly it got no real-world traction, however, and I only learned about when it was getting mocked on social media.

Latvian soup culture: soļanka all around! Seems the choice everywhere. And a delicious one.
Pictured are pork, pork, fish
(Vacationing in Rīga).
