I hope my fellow #chapelhill and #carrboro people are doing ok with round 2 ⛈️! This is my backyard right now. Recommended that you turn up the volume to max.

Hanging out in Nashville. Pictured marker practically in the middle of honky tonk central. I wonder if the party buses stop to commemorate the contribution to ornithological science.

Making a Jāņu siers, a cheese traditionally made for the Latvian midsummer celebration Jāņi. Cheese is what Latvians do instead of human sacrifice. Otherwise that movie Midsommar offers a pretty solid ethnographic description of it all.

I got emotional in the Helsinki airport and bought a bottle of Shalimar in duty free.

I think the nurturing fairy godmother vibe it has may have been extra appealing in a day of transit and separation.
This was my bedtime perfume for years: a spritz before bed every night; double dose for insomnia

Air is heavy over here
(though granted writing this from a rather swell wine bar)

Helsinki has tons of nifty things to do and see but honestly it feels like a bucket of quaaludes after a joyous 10 days in Rīga.

Latvian soup culture, cont.
Wet, snowy day in Rīga. More soup, of course. Cabbage for me, beet for the bf.

The Latvian word for wet, Slapjš, is pretty great. Onomatopoeia for peeling off wet socks.

Latvian soup culture: soļanka all around! Seems the choice everywhere. And a delicious one.
Pictured are pork, pork, fish

Just hanging out in a parking lot with a colander, as one does.

A night of twitchy insomnia, not assisted by reading current-day dystopian novel Prophet Song at times through the night. I wake up to an early morning news notification that Navalny is dead. Eternally expected but that almost makes it worse rather than better that it happened now.

Biggest perfumeworld discrepancy between name and what's in the bottle: Van Extasyx (Lorenzo Pazzaglia).
I quite like it! It smells like medicated Labello lipbalm. I see myself under a quilt in bed, eating chicken soup, on a rapid mend from the flu. Soothing but no perfume ecstasies In the picture

Not sure if I should classify this as a compliment... Working through the Luckyscent best of 2023 perfume samples, which is very, very heavy on the gourmands, not my most frequent genre to hit up. Woman next to me: "Wow! The restaurant next door smells great"! (Akro Bake)

Great afternoon yesterday watching a video of a 1994 Die Walküre from La Scala. Overall super production musically and otherwise. Brünnhilde got so fucked by the costume department though: wtf jazzercise stretch-pant nightmare is this?

Obvious Perfumes, Une Pistache: not a masterpiece but a clever take in the gourmand genre, a desserty fragrance in a cologne mode. Crisp, friendly, chic.

Movie last night: Alain Gomis, Rewind & Play. Metadocumentary about a manipulative Thelonious Monk interview/concert for French TV in 1969 that is super interesting but kind of manipulative in its own right as well. Really amazing Monk footage though.

Haven't been on a perfume sampling spree for a while but things change. Few little vials from LuckyScent, including their best of 2023. Only standout from the latter so far is Goldfield & Banks Ingenious Ginger, which is medicinal in a friendly way and which indeed has a bit of a fresh ginger bite.

I'm a fan of Daniel O'Sullivan. Was looking for tracks for a dinner party playlist and found his new album Physic Garden perfect. Turns out that it's his attempt at an album of library music, so background music joy indeed. If you need something smooth but a bit clever to back up clinking glasses...

Enjoying Profumum Soavissima a lot lately. I bought this at a boutique last summer and initially ended up disappointed. I'd been testing perfumes for ages at the store but later with a clear head and nose I didn't like it anymore. Fortunately that changed and it's working great for chiller days.

What I did on my Xmas vacation... I lucked out and my big order of comics from Italy came in right before I went on a 10-day break. Standouts are BACGLSP about conceptual-ish artist Piero Manzoni, and Lo Schermo Bianco, like V for Vendetta if all the characters were architects.
